I don’t think many customers fully understand how VAT—or paying a builder in cash actually works.
I’ve had a customer offer me £45,000 in cash. But cash doesn’t suddenly make the job tax-free or mean the builder can knock thousands off!
A VAT-registered builder can bank cash, but it still has to be invoiced, recorded and declared. If that £45,000 includes VAT, £7,500 of it is VAT before you even consider materials, wages, subcontractors, insurance, vehicles, tools and the other costs of running a legitimate building company.
Yes, VAT is paid when we buy materials, but eligible material VAT is normally offset against the VAT collected from the customer the difference still goes to HMRC.
So why do some customers expect a massive discount for paying cash? And builders would you accept £45,000 in notes?

Builders are clearly not loving the idea of this new government scheme for the construction industry. Interestingly, though, customers seem to be in favour of it.
It’s still not something you’ll find me signing up to, but I’m interested to hear both sides.

I, for one, would not participate in such nonsense. Handing even more money over to the government is not the way forward.
There are already better-established platforsm “pinnacle of all trades”where customers can find registered, reputable builders and where builders can promote their businesses.
I honestly don’t know a single builder who would willingly hand over even more money for another government-run scheme. What are everyone else’s thoughts?
