We are delighted to announce that following a record-breaking year, we have once again been listed in Wales Business Insiders Top 300 Companies.
As an independently owned building services company, we are pleased to not only feature in this list but also to have achieved year on year growth within the list. From our 2024 listing at position #173, to 2025’s position #121, we are very proud to have been listed at position #61 in this year’s list.
This achievement is not just a reflection of our continued strive for growth, but also a reflection of our exceptional workforce that we boast across all our sites and offices. CMB’s core-value of ‘Train & Retain’, where we regularly promote from within, provide opportunities for progression and encourage staff to work their way up the organisational chain, has helped ensure we have the fantastic team of staff that we have.
Steve Borley, CMB Managing Director & Founder, commented:
“We are proud to see the business continue to grow, as we have become the contractor of choice. This was no more evident with the projects secured during this period including KLA, John Street Offices, Cardiff Arena and Fairwater Community Campus.
The latter project in Fairwater was hugely impacted following the administration of Tier 1 contractor ISG Construction in September 2024 – a moment that sent shockwaves through the industry. Despite this challenge, we turned adversity into achievement by stepping in as Principal Contractor under our BESL brand, thanks in no small part to the brave decisions made by Cardiff Council and the support of our predominantly local supply chain.
This outcome reflects the company’s “Can-Do” philosophy and showcases the depth of expertise within our management team.”

On Saturday 9th May, 10 members of the CMB Engineering team took on the 109-mile Carten100 charity cycle ride from Cardiff to Tenby in support of Latch Welsh Children's Cancer Charity.
What began with a fundraising target of £1,000 quickly turned into something even more special, with the team proudly raising over £1,500 for this important cause.
Crossing the finish line together in their team jerseys was a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the dedication, teamwork, and determination shown throughout the challenge. Everyone involved represented CMB brilliantly, and we are incredibly proud of the effort shown both on the road and through the fundraising support received.
A special thank you to those who took part from CMB (and our supply chain) including: Tom Price, Nathan Brace, Catrin Ellis, Ian Packer, Matt Morris, Ben Wright, Mark Stogdon, Gareth Edwards, Paul O’Sullivan, Geraint Evans, and Mason Bermingham, who organised the event and helped make it such a success. Thank you also to our friends at Sam Drylining for sponsoring the team jerseys!
We look forward to continuing to support and take part in more fundraising initiatives in the future.

We were delighted to support and organise a recent business event on behalf of our friends at Llanrumney Hall Community Trust, bringing together a group of local businesses for a meaningful morning of networking.
Our sincere thanks go to Cardiff’s Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress for joining us for this event and for delivering a talk sharing their experiences of their time in office. It provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to gain insight into their work and the causes they support.
We’re pleased to announce we raised a fantastic £5,000 through the event, with proceeds being split between Llanrumney Hall (a community centre offering resources, events and programmes for locals) and the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities, Forget-me-not Chorus (supporting people living with dementia) and Cardiff Dogs Home, The Rescue Hotel.
The event allowed local businesses in attendance to gain a deeper understanding of the incredible work that takes place at Llanrumney Hall and how businesses can support both them and their community.
Thank you to all those who attended, including Evans Electrical Ltd., HSJ Accountants, Business & Tax Advisors, Cardiff Commisioning, The Cadmen Limited, Greenscape Systems, Thomas Carroll Brokers, Forrest Brown and Ken Poole MBE, Head of Economic Development at Cardiff Council. Your support and participation made the occasion a great success.
A special thank you also to Llanrumney Hall for hosting us, which included a fantastic guided tour of their 1,000-year-old Grade II Listed building, rich with Welsh history – we strongly encourage you to visit!
We look forward to continuing to support initiatives that bring local businesses and local charities together in the future.

We are delighted to have received a second consecutive full marks on our latest Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Monitors Report on the Fairwater Community Campus project.
BESL/CMB scored 45/45 in the 3 areas we were marked on: respect for the community; care for the environment; and value of our workforce. Another amazing achievement and a huge credit to all our staff and subcontractors.
The report highlighted:
“This project continues the excellent standards which were observed during the initial visit last year. The level of engagement within the community remained extensive, the facilities in place remained excellent and the level of engagement with the workforce has remained positive. This site exudes a very detailed knowledge of the construction industry and the impact from the perception on site is excellent.”
Thank you to all our team and supply chain who continue to make this project a success!

We were pleased to welcome Generation 4 Change (G4C) to Fairwater Community Campus last week for a guided visit of Cantonian High School and Riverbank and Woodlands schools.
G4C, part of Constructing Excellence, brings together young professionals from across the UK construction sector, creating a platform for young people to connect, collaborate, and shape the future of the industry. Their visit provided an opportunity to showcase the ongoing progress across the site, while creating space for those at the early stages of their careers to connect, exchange ideas, and gain insight into an active construction project.
We would like to thank all attendees for their time and contributions to a productive and insightful visit and look forward to sharing the latest video update on the project in the coming weeks.

We are pleased to have handed over Ysgol Gymraeg Tredegar to a satisfied client, following 10 months carrying out the Mechanical contract for Tilbury Douglas and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council.
The brand new 210-place seedling school benefits from a MUGA, a forest play area, a growing orchard, wild-flower meadows, a play area, solar panels and electric vehicle charging points. The project also includes a full Sustainable Urban Drainage System, increasing the site’s water retention capacity by 30% and delivering long-term environmental benefits.
Having been awarded the £960k Mechanical contract in early 2024, CMB commenced work on site later that year. Following the uncertainty surrounding the collapse of ISG, Tilbury Douglas reopened the site for all supply chain members promptly after securing the contract and progress was quickly made to achieve handover in December 2025 – ahead of schedule and in time for the new January term.
Some of the works we carried out included:
• Installing underfloor heating pipework supplied with low-pressure hot water generated by externally mounted ASHP’s.
• Fresh-air provision and extract ventilation through MVHR systems.
• Kitchen and food prep areas ventilated by a dedicated supply AHU and a separate extract fan connected to a ceiling-mounted canopy.
• Toilet areas were equipped with a dedicated extract fan operating at a background trickle rate. The fans increase to boost-speed upon detection of occupant presence via passive infra-red sensors and then revert to trickle mode once the space is unoccupied.
• Domestic hot water is generated via a heat exchanger served by the ASHP primary system.
• Above-ground drainage systems collect and discharge wastewater from sanitary fixtures, toilet areas, and beverage stations.
• Installation of a BMS providing automatic control of the mechanical systems, monitoring system operation, reporting alarms and faults, and logging operational data for analysis when required.
• Installation of a DX fan coil unit with an externally mounted condenser to provide cooling within the IT Hub.
A special thank you to all CMB personnel who contributed on this job. You can see the full gallery of images on our website now via the ink below.

After exactly 19 years to the day of outstanding service, we say a heartfelt thank you and farewell to Matt Clarke, who is retiring from CMB today as Regional Managing Director.
Throughout his time at CMB, Matt has been a driving force behind our growth, success, and culture. His leadership, knowledge, and commitment has helped shape the business into what it is today.
Matt joined CMB in April 2007 as one of 2 Directors who set up the CMB Bristol office and later was appointed as Regional Managing Director in April 2012. Over the years, he has built not only a strong professional legacy but also lasting relationships across the business.
CMB Founder and Group Managing Director, Steve Borley, shared:
“I first met Matt over 40 years ago when we both worked for national contractors and hit it off immediately with similar views on how the industry should be shaped. We kept in touch over the years and I thought he was the perfect fit for us which proved right when he joined us 19 years ago.
His energy and personality has had a lasting contribution to the growth of the business on the other side of the Severn Bridge and Matt has played a major part in the Story that is CMB Engineering.
We are very grateful to Matt for his contribution to the growth and legacy of the CMB business, and we wish him well in his well-earned retirement.”
Matt added:
“It’s been a genuine pleasure working with so many great people over the years. Thank you for the support, the laughs, and for making work far more enjoyable than it had any right to be. By my reckoning, since starting work at 16, I’ve put in the best part of 15,700 days on the job – so I feel I’ve just about earned a change of routine!
I wish you all the very best for the future… and I’ll raise a glass to you all while perfecting my new full-time role of doing exactly what I fancy each day.”
On behalf of everyone at CMB, thank you for your years of service Matt, and we wish you a happy and relaxing retirement 👏
