My main tip for starting your own business is to spend some time finding and WRITING DOWN the answers to these

5 basic Questions

1) What Do I sell?
2) How much do I have to sell it for?
3)Who do I sell it to?
4) Why do they want to buy it?
5)How do I sell it?

Let’s talk about pricing

1) The bottom line is the cost of the product for us in the shops it’s nice and clear
our supplier charge us and we have to pay them back

2) the cost of sales
That’s the rent, rates shelving carpet’s insurance heat light staffing rubbish disposal

3) VAT if you run a shop start factoring it in at beginning because suddenly having to put your prices up by 20% or pay the government a huge chunk you’ve not budgeted for will probably kill your business

4) Profit
You are entitled to make a profit.
It’s your reward for taking the risk and investing your time, your money, your energy and probably a bit of your soul
So don’t undercharge for that.

There are lots of ways of juggling these 4 parts
I’ll go into them in another post so watch out for more.

Thinking of opening a shop you need to take these things into consideration

You have to really like people and your product because you are going to be spending a lot of time with them
So.

1 You have to be very clear on who your customer is
What they want to buy and why

2. You have to be in a location your customer will come to
It’s their lives you need to be making easier

3. You have to be open when your customer wants to shop
You are a service some compromise is possible but you’ve got to be open when you say consistently

This is why so much retail is now on-line as the machine does all the work 24/7

If you open an actual Bricks and mortar shop then you’ll have to pay a lot more
eg Rent, rates, even waste disposal

And you’ll have to be present in it so you’ll probably want to employ someone which is currently about £100 a day when you’re paying minimum wage

It’s not all doom and gloom

There are really only two question to answer when you’re thinking of business ideas

What do you do?
Who do you do it for?

For example
I make beautiful crocheted blankets from reclaimed wool for people who want to feel warm and cosy in beautiful handcrafted things and live as sustainably as possible. 

So what do you do?

You are juggling a lot of things and you are entitled to help and support
