I always wonder what’s the story behind something. This is my pen holder….. a simple ‘tin mug’, you think!?
It’s actually a pewter tankard……..
Pewter began in the Guild System-1348, the Worshipful Company of Pewterers was formed in London to regulate the quality of the metal, ensuring it met strict standards. The Golden Age of the Pub (16th – 17th Century) it was everyday Barware! They found wood vessels rotted. During the Tudor and Stuart eras, pewter tankards became the standard vessel in taverns across Britain and its colonies.
By the late 18th century, the Industrial Revolution devastated the traditional cast-pewter market, they never completely ceased, it is still produced today. However, the industry suffered a near-total collapse The rise of cheaper, mass-produced glassware, ceramics.
Modern pewter tankards are completely lead-free and safe to use.
