We’re sharing something we don’t often see: a real security incident and how we handled it.
A client’s Laravel/Livewire site was compromised - phishing page, webshells, and even cryptominers (XMRig mining Monero). Not “one hacked page.” An established breach. Sites with doorways and hidden code pay a real price: sensitive data can leak (config, DB, customer info), performance drops, SEO and domain reputation suffer, and sender reputation (email deliverability) can be severely damaged or destroyed.
We traced it to a single critical CVE in a dependency, then: confirmed the codebase was clean, mapped every piece of malware, used logs to find who was using the shells, removed them, locked down PHP where it shouldn’t run, upgraded the vulnerable package on staging first, and hardened the app and server.
One outdated dependency was the whole door. That’s why we treat regular updates and basic hardening as non-negotiable for every client.
