It was recall and handling skills for the pups on Thursday. Then the Juniors worked on impulse control, emergency stop and then finished off with bow ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿšจ A common mistake with reactive dogs ๐Ÿšจ

One of the biggest mistakes I see is rewarding the dog immediately after theyโ€™ve barked, lunged, or reacted to a trigger.

While the intention is usually good, the timing matters.

If your dog reacts and then instantly receives food, they can learn that reacting is what earns the reward. Over time, this may strengthen the unwanted behaviour rather than change it.

Instead, aim to reward the behaviours you want to see: looking at you, remaining calm, disengaging from the trigger, or making good choices before the reaction happens.

Remember: dogs learn from consequences. If the reward comes after the reaction, thatโ€™s the behaviour youโ€™re most likely reinforcing.

Train the calm, not the chaos. ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ A walk burns energy... but
scent work builds a fulfilled dog.
The ProPaws Scent Gang have been out on the road and working hard, using their noses, solving problems, and building confidence one search at a time.
Scent work is one of the best ways to enrich your dog's life. It gives them a purpose, helps them feel fulfilled, and lets them use the powerful instincts they were born with.
A tired dog isn't always a fulfilled dog - but a dog that has used their brain, worked through a challenge, and succeeded? That's a happy dog. โ€ข
Whether your dog is young, older, energetic, nervous, or just needs more mental stimulation, scent work can be a brilliant way to help them thrive.
Message us today to join the ProPaws Scent Gang and give your dog something exciting to work for.

๐Ÿพ Want to enjoy walking your dog again โ€” without the stress, judgement or chaos?
If you love your dog but walks have become stressful, this is for you.
Our ProPaws Pack Walk on Salisbury Plain is designed for owners who want a calm, safe and neutral environment to walk their dogs around others โ€” without pressure, without judgement, and without being thrown into a busy class setting.
This is not a free-for-all dog walk.
It's a structured, trainer-supported group walk where dogs can practise being around other dogs, people and open spaces while staying under control and working at the right distance for them.
Whether your dog gets excited, pulls, barks, struggles to settle, or you simply want to build confidence around other dogs, one of our trainers will be on hand to guide you, support you and help with any issues that come up.
Salisbury Plain gives us the perfect open space to create calm, neutral exposure โ€” so both you and your dog can relax, breathe, and enjoy walking together again.
Come and meet like-minded dog owners, build your dog's confidence, and take the pressure out of social walking.
Spaces are limited to keep the walk safe and structured.
Message "PACK WALK" to book your place or find out more.

Dog Weight Matters: Why Nutrition Is About More Than Just the Number on the Scales

Keeping your dog at a healthy weight is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. A healthy weight supports strong joints, a healthy heart, better mobility, increased energy levels, and can even help your dog live a longer, happier life.

But maintaining a healthy weight isnโ€™t just about how much your dog eatsโ€”itโ€™s also about what they eat.

How Diet Affects Behaviour

Many owners are surprised to learn that a dogโ€™s diet can have a significant impact on their behaviour.

A balanced, nutritious diet provides the steady energy dogs need to learn, play, and cope with everyday life. Poor-quality diets, excessive treats, or foods high in sugar and fat can contribute to:

๐Ÿพ Hyperactivity or difficulty settling
๐Ÿพ Reduced focus during training
๐Ÿพ Increased frustration and impulsive behaviour
๐Ÿพ Low energy and lethargy
๐Ÿพ Digestive discomfort, which can affect mood and wellbeing

Just like people, dogs feel their best when their bodies are fuelled properly. A well-fed dog is often calmer, more responsive, and better able to concentrate during training sessions.

Why Dogs Need a Healthy, Balanced Diet

Dogs require a balance of protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre, and carbohydrates to support every aspect of their health.

A nutritious diet helps:

โœ” Maintain a healthy weight
โœ” Build and repair muscle
โœ” Support healthy skin and a shiny coat
โœ” Strengthen the immune system
โœ” Promote healthy digestion
โœ” Support brain function and learning

Choosing a high-quality food that is appropriate for your dogโ€™s age, size, activity level, and health needs is the foundation of good nutrition.

The Benefits of Dog-Safe Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables can be a fantastic addition to your dogโ€™s diet when fed safely and in moderation. They provide natural vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fibre while often being lower in calories than many commercial treats.

Some dog-safe options include:

๐Ÿฅ• Carrots โ€“ great for dental health and low-calorie snacking
๐Ÿซ Blueberries โ€“ packed with antioxidants
๐ŸŽ Apples (without seeds or core) โ€“ a crunchy source of fibre and vitamins
๐ŸŽƒ Pumpkin โ€“ supports healthy digestion
๐Ÿฅ’ Cucumber โ€“ refreshing and low in calories
๐Ÿฅฆ Broccoli โ€“ rich in vitamins when fed in small amounts
๐Ÿ‰ Watermelon (seedless) โ€“ hydrating and nutritious
๐Ÿ“ Strawberries โ€“ full of vitamins and antioxidants

Remember that fruits and vegetables should complement a balanced diet, not replace your dogโ€™s main meals.

A Few Foods to Avoid

Not all fruits and vegetables are safe for dogs. Avoid feeding:

โŒ Grapes and raisins
โŒ Onions, garlic, leeks, and chives
โŒ Avocado in large quantities
โŒ Corn cobs
โŒ Fruit stones and seeds
โŒ Chocolate and foods containing xylitol

When introducing any new food, start with small amounts and monitor your dog for any digestive upset.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

Healthy weight management doesnโ€™t require drastic measures. Consistent exercise, appropriate portion sizes, nutritious meals, and healthy treat choices all add up over time.

A healthy diet supports not only your dogโ€™s physical health but also their emotional wellbeing and behaviour. By making thoughtful choices about what goes into your dogโ€™s bowl, youโ€™re helping them enjoy a longer, healthier, and happier life.

Remember: Healthy body, healthy mind, happy dog. ๐Ÿพ
