Have you noticed any risky lane moves recently?

New The AA research finds that eight out of ten drivers regularly see this on motorways. Poor lane discipline doesn’t just slow everyone down, it can spark congestion, raise tempers, and increase the risk of collisions. On busy multi‑lane highways, even small lapses in lane discipline can trigger sudden braking, bunching traffic, and near‑miss incidents.

With 85% of drivers also reporting middle‑lane hogging and 80% noticing undertaking, both of which disrupt traffic flow and can lead to dangerous situations. Middle‑lane hogging isn’t just inconsiderate; it’s illegal, and can carry a £100 fine and 3 penalty points. It also creates real hazards such as:

❌ Bottlenecking
❌ Risky manoeuvres
❌ Aggressive driving
❌ Sudden lane changes

Lane discipline is a simple but important part of keeping roads safe. Our blog with the Metropolitan Police and National Highways highlights this and why middle‑lane hogging is a problem, and what drivers can do to solve it.

Northern Ireland's new drivers to face major licensing changes from October 27/01/2026

Northern Ireland has today become the first part of the UK to introduce Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL). This is a major step forward for evidence-led road safety. Drivetech strongly supports this move and welcome the recognition of the heightened risk new drivers face immediately after passing their test.

Leo Taylor, Director of Drivetech commented:
“Northern Ireland becoming the first part of the UK to introduce Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) is a hugely significant milestone for road safety, and one that reflects what evidence has been telling us for years.

“At Drivetech, we know all too well the most vulnerable time for a driver isn’t when they’re learning to drive. It’s in the months immediately after passing their test. During this period, the skills new drivers need to become fully competent, including risk awareness, decision-making and managing distraction, are still developing. These skills come under particular pressure for newer drivers when driving at night, or when carrying other passengers.

“This reform recognises this critical adjustment period, giving young drivers the space to build experience more safely. We hope today’s announcement paves the way for similar action across the rest of the UK. The AA’s own analysis shows at least 58 lives could be saved every year through this type of measure."

AA Accident Assist Reveals What Drivers Crashed Into During 2025 | AA 26/01/2026

Whether it’s parking into a tight space or navigating a busy street, parking and manoeuvres are moments where even the most experienced drivers can be caught out. 👀

Here’s more about what’s happening, with data on incidents gathered by our colleagues in AA Accident Assist: 👇
https://www.theaa.com/about-us/newsroom/insurance-news/aa-accident-assist-reveals-what-drivers-crashed-into-during-2025

The environments that drivers find themselves in when parking and manoeuvring can often bring unexpected challenges such as limited visibility, tight turning points and hazards such as pedestrians, poles, uneven surfaces and changing weather conditions.

Whilst the speeds of these collisions are often low, the impact can still lead to downtime, repair costs, frustrations and unnecessary safety risks. ❌

That is why educating drivers, even the more experienced drivers, is important to creating safer roads.

The safest limit is ZERO.

This festive season, make safety your priority. If you're driving, don't drink any alcohol.🤝

Did you know:

✅ 1 in 5 fatal crashes in 2023 involved drink or drugs.

✅ There were almost 60,000 roadside alcohol tests during December and January 24/25, and almost 1 in 10 people failed.

✅ Drink driving causes 17% of all UK road deaths.

So, the message is clear: if you’re driving, don’t drink. Even one drink can impair judgment and reaction times, putting lives at risk.

As celebrations ramp up, plan ahead. Arrange a designated driver, book a taxi or stay overnight if you’ve been drinking.

Together, we can make UK roads safer this Christmas and New Year.

The safest limit is ZERO.

Brake's Road Safety Week 2025 is here, and the conversation matters more than ever.

Despite a slight fall in road fatalities last year, older drivers remain disproportionately affected, accounting for 22% of deaths and 8% of all casualties. At Drivetech, we believe targeted action is essential. That’s why we’re calling for refresher training via insurance discount incentives and confidence-building courses for drivers aged 70+, helping them stay safe and mobile for longer.

As Leo Taylor, our Director, says: “With one in five road deaths now among people aged 70 and over, we need to do more than celebrate small declines. We need to act.”

Throughout Road Safety Week, we’ll be sharing practical safe driving tips, so stay tuned!

Darker evenings. Colder roads. Greater risk.

As the clocks go back this weekend, visibility drops and driving conditions change. For drivers, the seasonal shift brings fresh safety challenges.

We’ve put together a quick infographic to help everyone stay alert and prepared.

We need a coalition of the willing – led by government and properly resourced – to turn the tide of road fatalities 23/10/2025

Road safety must be a national priority. 🚨

In a new article for Policing Insight, our Director Leo Taylor calls for a government-led coalition of the willing to tackle the alarming plateau in UK road fatalities.

With over 1,600 lives lost last year, it's time to act. Leo highlights how distraction, driver behaviour, and under-resourced policing are stalling progress, and why technology and collaboration are key to reversing the trend.

At Drivetech, we’re committed to supporting organisations, police forces, and the general public, in creating safer roads through education, insight, and action.

Bridge strikes aren’t just a nuisance. They’re a risk to lives, livelihoods and logistics.

One incident in Eccles this summer left 20 injured. Three seriously. One bridge strike can disrupt thousands of journeys and end a driver’s career in seconds.

We need to ask the tough questions. Why do these collisions keep happening?

It’s not just about missed signs. It’s about over-confidence, poor route planning, reliance on sat navs that weren’t built for commercial vehicles, and fatigue that chips away at judgement.

Our training focuses on four rules every driver should know by heart:
✔ Stop if you’re unsure. Every time.
✔ Know your vehicle height like you know your date of birth.
✔ Plan your route and check for restrictions.
✔ If diverted, pull over and ask. Don’t guess.

And regulators are watching. Network Rail logged 1,532 bridge strikes last year. The Office of the Traffic Commissioner has made it clear: operators who don’t act face consequences.

Bridge strike prevention isn’t optional. It’s compliance. It’s safety. It’s common sense.

Find out what you can do to prevent bridge strikes:
