๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŽ‰ Basingstoke Green Week starts tomorrow โ€“ and thereโ€™s plenty happening in Basingstoke and beyond.

The week-long celebration of climate and nature action kicks off tomorrow at The Malls in Basingstoke town centre, with a full day of green market stalls, live performances, games - like the 'whose poo' game with the council's wildlife rangers in this picture - plus a wildlife trail, repair cafรฉ advice, bike safety checks and tips on saving energy and supporting nature at home.

Meanwhile, free events and activities are also being held on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend in Overton as part of Overton Green Weekend. Activities organised by Sustainable Overton include river dipping, bird walks, bug hunts and a preโ€‘loved clothes swap.

These are both great ways to get involved with Basingstoke Green Week as it returns to the borough for its 14th year from tomorrow through to next week Sunday (14 June).

An update on the borough council's climate change efforts ๐Ÿ‘‡

Weโ€™ve cut our carbon footprint by nearly 95% since we declared a climate emergency ๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒ

In 2019, our councillors unanimously voted to declare a climate emergency for Basingstoke and Deane. That included setting us a target to become carbon neutral by December 2025 โ€“ one of the most ambitious aims for any council in the country.

Now, new figures show that we managed to reduce our emissions by 94.6% by the end of last year, meaning our carbon footprint in 2025 was around 20 times smaller than it was when the emergency was declared.

That progress is due to years of practical action, including installing solar panels, making our buildings more energy efficient and switching most of our vehicles to run on electricity or a lowโ€‘carbon biofuel.

Around three fifths of our remaining emissions are due to the Basingstoke Aquadrome and work is already underway to replace it with a modern, energy efficient water and leisure complex with a significantly smaller carbon footprint. In a one-off move, we have used carbon credits we already owned, which are supporting the planting of new forests in Scotland, to reduce our reported emissions for 2025.

Going forward, we will continue to take action to reduce our own emissions and build on our ongoing work together with residents, groups and businesses to help the borough towards its ambition to reach net zero by 2045.

World Environment Day takes place this Friday, focusing on all the actions we can take .

And so - for this week's - we're suggesting things you can do in the garden to help make a difference to tackle climate change and support wildlife too:
๐ŸŒฒ Plant trees, hedges or shrubs to absorb carbon and provide shade as summers get hotter
๐Ÿ’ฆ Collect rainwater in a water butt
๐ŸŒป Choose native plants that support wildlife and cope better with local conditions

If you're after more tailored advice, the wildlife specialists in tje Basingstoke and Deane Green Team will visit your home for free to give you top tips for what you can do to help wildlife thrive. The visits are available to everyone who lives in the borough - it doesn't matter how big your garden is, or if you live in a flat with a balcony. Book yours using the link in the comments.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ May is National Walking Month โ€“ but we know sometimes you need to get somewhere a bit quicker ๐Ÿšฒ

Walking is a brilliant way to get around for short trips, but cycling is also a great, low-carbon option if youโ€™re short on time or travelling a little further. Both help cut carbon emissions, save money on fuel and support your health and wellbeing.

This month, weโ€™re encouraging everyone to choose walking and cycling for the journeys you make most often.
