Morning everyone. I posted this recently but given the temperatures that are expected this week, I should it was worth a reshare...
It's going to be a scorching mid to late 30 degrees today so make sure you stay hydrated ๐ฆ
Short term dehydration can play havoc with your body including false hunger, mood fluctuations, tiredness and low mood. More severe complications of dehydration include, sickness, muscle weakness, depression, lifeless skin, sore throat, extreme tiredness and kidney problems. With a few simple steps you can keep your body and brain happy through the power of water.
Consider buying a large 2 litre water bottle so you can easily measure your water consumption. You can buy really inexpensive large water bottles from budget shops like B&M, Poundstretcher and Properjob. If you don't have one, consider making a written note of how much water you are drinking throughout the day.
Aim for at least 2 litres of water a day or more if you are doing high impact work that makes you sweat.
Avoid consuming drinks that contain sugar, alcohol and caffeine as this can cause dehydration as well as nasty energy highs and lows. If you fancy a change from water, herbal teas are a great choice - drink warm or add ice and drink chilled.
Opt for tap or bottled/filtered still water where possible. Try adding ice or putting your water bottle in the freezer overnight to keep it cold throughout the day.
Water doesn't have to be boring! Make yourself a water "cocktail". Add slices of citrus fruit, cucumber ribbons and fresh mint to make water drinking more fun and tasty. Your body will benefit from the extra fruit nutrients too.
Avoid downing large quantities of water in one go. All you will do is overload your bladder, making you p*e the water out almost as fast as you drank it. Instead, try to sip it regularly and slowly throughout the day.
Avoid leaving drinking water until last thing at night. Chances are you will already be dehydrated and it will play havoc with your sleep pattern, not to mention having to keep getting up in the night to p*e.
Slow and steady wins the water race! Keep drinking water, stay hydrated and keep things interesting. You will feel focused and happy and your body will thank you for it too.
(If you think you are severely dehydrated, always take advice from a medical practitioner.)

Matt Hancock is now seeking guidance on vitamin D as plans to give a supplement to 2 million elderly, vulnerable people in Scotland rolls out.
A Spanish study, giving hospitalized COVID patients a high dose of vitamin D (40,000iu) finds that only 2% end up in ICU and none died - compared to 50% of those not given vitamin D, with one in six dying.
My colleagues have been sending them guidance since February without response so this is well overdue.

Notice the first mention of vitamin C at the end. All previous comments re vitamin C in the Guardian have been negative so this is a first. Letโs hope this will change soon.

๐ Save as a reminder for when you need to S.T.O.P.
โS. Stop: Take a pause. Interrupt the thought thatโs causing stress and anxiety.
๐จT. Take a few deep breaths: Invite calm with a deep inhale and longer exhale.
๐O. Observe how your body feels: Where do you feel it manifesting physically? Whatโs causing you to feel this way? Are you able to separate your reaction from the raw experience?
๐P. Proceed with awareness: Ground in the present moment. Make a conscious choice to move forward with kindness and compassion.
After practicing this calming technique over a period of time, you will begin to notice a change not only in your reaction to situations, but the circumstances themselves. Youโll meet relationships, conflict, disappointment, and failure with self-compassion and non-judgment, opening yourself to new, richer opportunities for lasting contentment. โจ
