Today we made Christmas bobble hats for the tree and wrote some instructions to go with them focusing on adverbials of time. I have loved tutoring these two ❤️
Here’s to more fun ahead in 2024.

How do you get reluctant writers on board? With Super Mario Bros of course! 🍄 ⭐️

My new favourite thing is to dish out puzzle pieces for every correct answer. Today was a Trolls special ❤️

Another Halloween special today. I always lose!!
When we’d finished, we emptied all the words in the bag to make spooky themed sentences, my favourite being: Last night, a gruesome witch cackled loudly over her cauldron.
We then had to name all the different word classes we had used in our sentence: preposition, determiner, adjective, noun, verb, adverb, preposition, determiner noun. Brilliant fun whilst learning!

Now tutoring children and cats!

This game is a firm favourite with my tutoring pupils and can be used in so many ways.
1. Close your eyes and pick 3 counters from the bowl (can be any number of counters dependent on the age of the child)
2. Turn over your counters. What number have you made?
3. Who’s number is the greatest? Yours or mine?
4. Draw the greater than/less than sign between the two numbers
5. Repeat until you’ve made enough different numbers
6. Now order all the numbers we’ve made from smallest to biggest
7. Point to a number with ‘x’ number of hundreds/tens/ones
8. Which numbers are even/odd?
9. Choose two numbers and find the difference using column subtraction
10. Choose two numbers and add them together. Which two numbers do I need to choose to make the largest/smallest total?
Brilliant! 🤩

The Temu resources went down a treat last week. Here we were revising column addition and swatting the flies with the corresponding answer. How many flies will survive? 😂

Lots more place value going on this week.
Here we were working on comparing and ordering numbers up to 1 million, discussing the place value. Some of these numbers were really difficult to read but the comma helped us to separate the hundreds and the thousands.
We then played a greater than and less than game. Who can make the biggest 5 digit number? My pupil definitely won there with 99,999.
We subtracted to find the difference between our two numbers. No exchanging needed there. Phew!
What a lot of maths!

Thank you to for the idea behind this spelling activity.
My year 3/4 pupils absolutely loved this. A classic game of tiddlywinks where the aim is to land your counter on a spelling word. When successful, the opposition needs to spell the word and, if correct, keeps the card. Repeat until all the words have been spelled correctly.
I was far too competitive when playing this!! Tiddlywinks for the win 🏆

Today was number bond revision! We revised number bonds to 10 and 100 and then used this knowledge to find missing numbers to 100. Quite tricky at first, because we kept forgetting the extra 10 made up by the ones, but we got there in the end!
Numicon and a pairs game made this super fun!

Year 3 place value today. Adding/subtracting on a hundred square, lots of practical work using deines (the deines are stacked btw before anyone tells me that’s actually 116 lol), partitioning numbers and making 3 digit number sculptures. We creatively managed to turn 765 into a swimming pool diving board 🤣 Our 456 four-poster bed was even better but unfortunately we fell asleep in it before we could take a snap! 😝
Finished with a quick revision of odd and even. Who said you can’t learn in 30 degree heat!! ☀️🥵
