Today, we’re diving into the exciting world of safety standards for climbing and mountaineering helmets! (Yes, really—safety can be thrilling when it means avoiding a rock to the head.)

The EN 12492 standard lays down the safety requirements and testing methods for mountaineering and climbing helmets. These marvels of head protection consist of three key components: a tough outer shell that laughs in the face of impacts, an adjustable internal structure for that perfect snug fit, and a chin strap to keep it all in place—even when gravity tries to disagree. 🧗

But these helmets aren’t just about looking stylish on a cliffside; they come with serious protective features like impact absorption and pe*******on resistance. In all cases, the force transmitted to your head must be ≤10 kN (because nobody likes a 10 kN headache). As for pe*******on resistance, we’re talking about an impact energy of 1.5 J—which translates to a 3 kg mass falling from a height of 50 mm. 🪨

Now, let’s talk about what really matters: keeping your noggin safe from falling debris. To meet shock absorption requirements, here’s what these helmets have to endure:

Impact absorption: The top of the helmet must withstand a 5 kg flat striker dropped from 2 meters.
Pe*******on resistance: A 3 kg conical striker is dropped from 1 meter—and if it makes contact with your head, well, let’s just say that’s not ideal.
In short, these helmets are built to take a hit—so your head doesn’t have to! 🤌 13/02/2025
