🇬🇧 Yesterday, the British Museum opened its doors to display the Bayeux Tapestry, the 70-metre-long artwork commemorating the Battle of Hastings, back in the United Kingdom after nearly 1,000 years

The ceremony featured speeches by His Majesty King Charles III, President Emmanuel Macron, and Prime Minister Andy Burnham, marking a historic moment and an exceptional symbol of the deep, shared history between the UK and France, and of the Entente Cordiale between our two countries 🤝

Our France Country Director, Anne Duncan, joined David Thompson, our Director of UK and External Relations, and Ruth Mackenzie, former Director of Arts at the British Council and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Arts (House of Lords), at the celebratory opening.

This marks the first event of MILLENIUM 2027, European Year of the Normans, a year-long celebration of Norman heritage that we are proud to support.

🇫🇷 Hier, le British Museum a ouvert ses portes pour exposer la Tapisserie de Bayeux, l’œuvre de 70 mètres commémorant la bataille d’Hastings, de retour au Royaume-Uni après près de 1 000 ans

La cérémonie a comporté des discours de Sa Majesté le Roi Charles III, du Président Emmanuel Macron et du Premier ministre Andy Burnham, marquant un moment historique et un symbole exceptionnel de l’histoire commune profonde entre le Royaume-Uni et la France, ainsi que de l’Entente cordiale entre nos deux pays 🤝

Notre directrice pour la France, Anne Duncan, a rejoint David Thompson, notre directeur du Royaume-Uni et des relations externes, ainsi que Ruth Mackenzie CBE, précédente directrice des arts au British Council et sous-secrétaire d’État parlementaire aux Arts (Chambre des lords), lors de l’ouverture célébratoire.

Ceci marque l’événement inaugural du MILLENIUM 2027, Année européenne des Normands, une célébration d’un an du patrimoine normand que nous avons l’honneur de soutenir.

🇬🇧 For the first time in nearly 1,000 years, the Bayeux Tapestry has returned to the UK.

Today, President Emmanuel Macron joined Prime Minister Andy Burnham for his first state visit to attend the ceremonial opening of the exhibition featuring the 70-metre-long tapestry at the British Museum . This historic loan from France to the United Kingdom highlights the long shared history of both countries and stands as a testament to the enduring entente cordiale 🤝

On this occasion, we are proud to highlight the role we have played for over 90 years in strengthening international bonds through culture, the arts, education, and language.

For over two years, we have been working alongside Région Normandie in France and key British partners to bring to life the upcoming MILLENIUM 2027, European Year of the Normans Millenium Normandie This spectacular celebration Norman heritage across Europe and the four nations of the UK, of which the loan of the Bayeux Tapestry is the first step, marks a new chapter in our shared future.

👉 The Bayeux Tapestry will be open to the public at the British Museum from 10 September 2026 until 11 July 2027.

🇫🇷 Pour la première fois en près de 1 000 ans, la Tapisserie de Bayeux est de retour au Royaume-Uni.

Aujourd'hui, le président Emmanuel Macron s'est joint au Premier ministre Andy Burnham lors de sa première visite d'État pour assister à l'ouverture officielle de l'exposition présentant la tapisserie de 70 mètres de long au British Museum . Cet emprunt historique de la France vers le Royaume-Uni met en lumière la longue histoire partagée des deux pays et témoigne de l'entente cordiale qui perdure entre elles. 🤝

À cette occasion, nous sommes fiers de souligner le rôle que nous jouons depuis de nombreuses années pour renforcer les liens internationaux à travers la culture, les arts, l'éducation et la langue.

Depuis plus de deux ans, nous travaillons aux côtés de Région Normandie en France et de partenaires britanniques clés pour concrétiser le MILLENIUM 2027, Année européenne des Normands Millenium Normandie. Cette célébration spectaculaire du patrimoine Normand à travers l'Europe et les quatre nations du Royaume-Uni ne représente que la première étape d'un partenariat plus large.

👉 La Tapisserie de Bayeux sera ouverte au public au British Museum du 10 septembre 2026 au 11 juillet 2027.
