On this day 44 years ago, 9th Oct 1981, France officially passed the law ending capital punishment. As recently as 1977, the guillotine was still being used. Minister of Justice at the time, Robert Badinter was instrumental in advocating for the removal of capital punishment and introduced a bill to the Senate on 30th September, 1981 that was adopted into law the following week. Mr Badinter will be recognised today with a cenotaph at the Pantheon.
