At one time, homosexuality was "unhealthy", and birth control was "bad", ingredients we now see as healthy were removed from food. Criticism of Church and State were seen as a threat to society and sinners.

Even when thought to be wrong, they should not have been banned, on principle. And same is true today.

Even when we are sure something is unhealthy or bad, we need to protect it as long as it's voluntary.

That includes things you and I dislike, including the tribal, collectivist stupidity of racism, the ignorance of "bad" religions, the annoyance of offensive speech, the risk that people will choose unhealthy food, and so on.
