The Disaster Resilient Museums Committee (DRMC) is a new International Committee of the International Council of Museums.
The ICOM-Disaster Resilient Museums Committee (ICOM-DRMC) serves museums globally as an effective, inspiring, instrumental, and cooperative interdisciplinary platform about emergency preparedness and disaster response. Its aim is to promote good practices in disaster planning, mitigation, response and recovery for museums and to assist museum professionals. The Disaster Relief for Museums fund was
first created by ICOM to provide assistance to museums damaged by the 2004 tsunami. ICOM has since then extended its mission to include all manmade and natural hazards impacting museums and their staff. ICOM DRMC works closely with other organizations devoted to cultural heritage preservation, including UNESCO, ICOMOS, IFLA, ICA, ICCROM, Disaster Risk Management Standing Committee, and the Blue Shield. The objectives of the DRMC are as follows:
* Collect information on museums impacted by disasters;
* Promote and co-ordinate disaster response when a disaster exceeds national response capacities ;
* Convert the solidarity and offers of assistance of the international museum community into bilateral activities ;
* Broadcast public awareness campaigns in the media ;
* Elaborate long term capacity building of expert knowledge and regional networks.
