Coconut Oil - friend or foe?⁣

Coconut oil has gotten a bad rap recently- once reigning as one of the healthiest ingredients among flaxseeds and avocados, it tumbled from grace and now has some people worrying that all that oil isn’t all that great for you (don’t you hate when that happens?)⁣

We wanted to help dispel some myths about coconut oil, why we include it in our carefully- crafted recipes and why it absolutely can (and should) be a part of your dogs diet!⁣

𝘊𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘵 𝘖𝘪𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘍𝘢𝘵: this one is true! But there’s saturated fat and there’s saturated fat- coconut oil is sold in many forms, the most commonly used in products being odourless, or refined, oil to eliminate the tropical flavour. This refinement process strips away a lot of coconut oil’s essential beneficial properties such as the high levels of medium chain fatty acids which provide much of the nutrition. What remains after refinement is a saturated fat akin to margarine, not to mention the coconuts used are often low quality with chlorine being used to refine the oil- yuck. ⁣

Unrefined, organic, raw coconut oil is high in saturated fat but the good kind that your dog’s body can use to reduce inflammation, build healthy skin barriers and lubricante joints. ⁣

𝘊𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘵 𝘖𝘪𝘭 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘔𝘺 𝘋𝘰𝘨 𝘍𝘢𝘵: as long as you are using an organic, unrefined coconut oil, your dog can safely consume up to 1 tablespoon per 15kg body weight. * The medium chain fatty acids are efficiently metabolised and will not cause weight gain. Of course, common sense is key here- if you have a couch potato on your hands, then maybe only serve them a little spoonful with their meals. ⁣

Coconut Oil has also been shown to have 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 properties...if your pup is suffering from itchy skin, a wound that won’t heal or eczema, it is worth adding coconut oil to their diet. ⁣

Dogs to not have oily skin so it is imperative that they receive an adequate amount of high quality fats in their diet. ⁣

We want to bring you inside our kitchen and let you know where we source our products, why, and what that means for your dog as the end taster! ⁣

We pride ourselves on our meaty treats because we know we provide our customers with the absolute best quality: our venison comes from 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 on Sharpham Estate in Shropshire. We use fresh, organic venison mince that is intended for human consumption- our suppliers don’t even know that we are a pet business! Many pet food companies claim to use organic or prime meat, but these almost always come from factory farms where animals are treated cruelly and the meat is cured to remain shelf stable- 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺- please be aware if your dog is consuming a non-organic certified product, the company has no obligation to disclose their suppliers. ⁣

We started our business as veggie-only, so for us to incorporate meat into our products meant the animal it was sourced from had to be happy, healthy and free. But there is a further advantage to consuming wild and pasture-raised meat: it has very high levels of 𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐠𝐚 𝟑 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐝, one of the healthiest anti-inflammatory agents available (this goes for humans too!) ⁣

Conventional and factory-farmed meat is high in Omega 6- a build up of which is linked to high inflammation, cancer, heart disease and diabetes in pets as well as humans. ⁣

The truth is the Pet Industry has come miles in the past 5 years with many customers refusing to buy meat meal based kibble and eliminating gluten from their dog’s diet. But with tags like “all natural” and “superfood” being thrown around, it has become increasingly difficult to discern quality versus good marketing. ⁣
