Ghazi Al-Saudi (1935-2023), born in Baghdad, was a leading figure of modern Iraqi muralism. Trained at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad under Jewad Selim and Faeq Hassan, he later continued his studies in Rome, specializing in murals and fresco techniques.

Returning to Baghdad in the 1960s, he played a vital role in shaping a modern Iraqi visual identity — merging European mural techniques with Arab-Islamic artistic heritage. His monumental works at the entrance of Az-Zawraa Park and at the Baghdadi Museum have become cultural landmarks within the city’s landscape.

Al-Saudi’s style is distinguished by its structured compositions, references to Iraqi miniature traditions, Islamic architectural motifs, and popular memory — reinterpreted through a modern artistic language. As a professor and head of the mural arts department, he also mentored generations of Iraqi artists, reinforcing the importance of public art in Iraq’s contemporary scene.

Today, several of his murals have suffered degradation and damage. calls upon the relevant authorities to take urgent action to protect, preserve, and restore these important works, which form part of Iraq’s cultural and artistic heritage.

A pioneer who transformed walls into living memory.

Thank you all for being part of our very first JALSA evening.

Last night, gathered in a Saudi restaurant around Iftar and poetry, we shared more than a meal — we shared words, stories, and presence. The poetry was presented by the platform, whose words brought depth and emotion to the evening.

It is with you that this community is created. And it is for you that it continues to grow.

JALSA exists because you show up, support, and believe in spaces where culture and connection meet.

We’re deeply grateful — and this is only the beginning.
