The process developed by eBay is based on computer vision, a branch of artificial intelligence that teaches a machine to authenticate and understand images. Called "e-skin", the prototype is capable of detecting and measuring classic vital signs, such as heart rate. The measured data are displayed on the skin in real time thanks to electrodes.

Bionym, a Canadian startup, has just opened pre-orders for a biometric bracelet that uses heartbeat as an identifier. Called Nymi, it replaces passwords to unlock access to terminals and online services, but can also be used to pay for or control sign language interfaces. Nymi includes an electrocardiogram sensor, a microcontroller, a Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy module, an accelerometer and a gyroscope. An electrode placed in contact with the wrist and another placed in the closing loop are used to capture the heart rate.
