42nd and Vanderbilt,
Between 8:30 am and 9:30 am, from 2007 to 2016, at the southern corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue in New York City

Danish photographer, Peter Funch, placed these rigid confines upon his nine year photographic project, 42nd and Vanderbilt. Narrowing the infinite opportunities N.Y.C. has to offer an artist, Funch brings to the surface the minutiae contained within a fragment of our daily routine, the short walk from point A to point B, reminding us that the practice of photography in general, and street photography specifically, has only scratched the surface of possibility. 

Imperfect Atlas,
Peter Funch’s Latest Project Addresses The Passage Of Time And Man’s Continued And Evolving Effects On The Environment. Appropriately, Funch Explores The Anthropocene By Employing A Photographic Technique Invented At The Height Of The Industrial Revolution, That Of RGB Tri-Color Separations.

Featuring Images Captured During Funch’s Various Trips Through The Northern Cascade Mountain Range, The Book Is An Imperfect Recreation Of Landscapes And Wilderness As Depicted In The Archive Of Vintage Postcards And Ephemera Of The Region The Artist Amassed Throughout His Travels.

Using Maps And Satellite Imagery To Locate The Position Where The Postcard Images Were Created, Funch Recaptures The Landscapes Across Three Distinct Exposures Via Red, Green, And Blue Filters, Transposed One On Top Of The Other.

The various flower bouquets are photographed on the dining table of Peter Funch’s home in Greenpoint, NYC, from 2013 to 2015. Flowers from the supermarket, flowers from the garden, flowers from work, flowers from friends and flowers of love.

You probably know the feeling of sitting in the city, watching people pass by. Maybe youmake up stories, imagining who they are and where they’re going From 2004 to 2017, artist Peter Funch lived in New York City. Every day, he spent hours capturing the daily rhythms and random encounters of thousands of people in the city. This effort resulted in two photo series, Babel Tales and 42nd and Vanderbilt, which you can experience in the weekend exhibition Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Each series, in its own way, reveals how we, as individuals, become part of a larger, collective presence in public spaces.
