Note to self:
You don’t have to fix everything right now.
Some things need time.
Some answers will come later.
Some situations aren’t yours to solve today.
Take a breath. Slow down.
You’re allowed to pause without falling behind.
Not everything needs your attention

When someone is overwhelmed, anxious, angry, or emotionally activated, telling them to “just calm down” usually doesn’t help.

Because the problem isn’t that they don’t want to calm down.

In that moment, their nervous system may be in a state of protection. Their body is reacting before their rational mind has a chance to take over. Heart rate increases, muscles tense, breathing changes, thoughts become faster or more rigid, and simply hearing “calm down” doesn’t switch that system off.

In fact, it can sometimes make things worse.

It can feel like:
“Your feelings are too much.”
“You’re overreacting.”
“You should be able to control this.”

What helps instead is regulation before reasoning.

Connection.
Safety.
A slower voice.
A little space.
Breathing.
Movement.
Being listened to without immediately trying to fix the problem.

Once the nervous system settles, we have much more access to perspective, communication, empathy, and problem-solving.

So instead of saying:

“Just calm down.”

Try:

“I’m here. We can slow this down.”
“You don’t have to figure this out right now.”
“Let’s take a moment.”
“I can see this is really overwhelming for you.”

Sometimes calm isn’t something we can demand from someone. It’s something we help create.

As autumn begins, I’m opening a small writing & reflection group, a gentle space to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and explore what’s happening within.

We’ll start with a few minutes of body check-in, noticing sensations, breath, tension, energy, and whatever is present. Then we’ll move into guided writing and reflection, with prompts to help you explore your inner world, emotions, relationships, and experiences.

No writing experience is needed. You don’t need to be “good” at writing. This is simply a space to pause, listen inward, and put words to what may be difficult to say otherwise.

The contribution is symbolic, simply to support commitment and engagement with the group.

A new season, a little more space to listen to yourself.

We often think stress only lives in our minds, but our bodies experience it too. It can show up as tight shoulders, a racing heart, shallow breathing, fatigue, or a feeling that you’re constantly “on,” even when nothing urgent is happening.

One of the simplest ways to support your nervous system is to slow down and walk. Not as exercise or another task to complete, but as a moment to reconnect with yourself.

Leave your phone in your pocket if you can. Feel the rhythm of your steps. Notice the ground beneath your feet. Pay attention to the breeze, the sounds around you, the warmth of the sun, or the coolness of the air. These small sensations help bring your attention back to the present instead of getting caught in loops of worry or overthinking.

When you gently focus on what you’re sensing rather than everything you’re trying to solve, your body receives the message that it’s okay to ease out of constant alertness. That doesn’t make your problems disappear, but it can create enough space to think more clearly, breathe more deeply, and respond instead of simply reacting.

You don’t need a long hike or the perfect setting, walk around your neighbourhood, a nearby park, or any quiet street can make a difference. The goal isn’t to escape your thoughts, it’s to give your mind and body a chance to reconnect.

Sometimes healing doesn’t begin with finding the right answer. Sometimes it begins with taking one slow, intentional step at a time.

Your eyes are more than windows to the world, they’re deeply connected to your nervous system.

So much of our day is spent focusing, scanning, and taking in constant stimulation. Over time, the muscles around the eyes can stay in a subtle state of tension, sending signals to the body that it’s time to stay alert.

When we intentionally soften our gaze, relax the muscles around the eyes, and allow our vision to become more spacious, we give the nervous system a different message: you are safe.

As the eyes release, the jaw often softens, the breath deepens, and the body begins to shift out of survival mode and into a state of rest and regulation.

Sometimes, calming the nervous system doesn’t start with doing more, it starts with seeing differently.

Take a moment today to let your eyes rest. You might be surprised by how much your whole body follows.

The belly AKA Our gut is often one of the first places where stress reveals itself.

Before we can name what is happening, the body has already responded. A tightening. A holding. A subtle preparation for something that might come next.

This belly has its own memory. It has learned to brace during uncertainty, pressure, conflict, and moments when we felt we had to stay in control.

Not because something is wrong with us. Because the body is always trying to protect us.

But the same body that learned to contract can also learn to soften.

Sometimes the first step is simply noticing:
What am I holding here?
And do I still need to hold it?
