Welcome to Chefchaouen, Morocco’s famous blue city.

Chefchaouen is known for its blue-hued buildings and streets. This picturesque city, located in the Riff Mountains, was built in the 15th century, but was not painted blue until the 20th century. Though the real reason it was painted blue is still ambiguous, here are a few possibilities: 💙

Blue is tied to Jewish custom and culture. Blue represents the sky, and thus, heaven and God.

Blue keeps the city cool

Blue represents water and the city’s Ras el-Maa Waterfall

Blue is a calming and alluring to tourists

Whatever the initial reason might have been, the blue paint has been maintained by locals for its tradition and heritage.

📍 La Sultana, Marrakech, Morocco

From its vaulted ceilings to its beautiful zellige floors, La Sultana in Marrakech will always continue to amaze us! 🤍

La Sultana is a hotel located in the UNESCO world heritage site of the Medina of Marrakech. In 2001, its architectural details began to be restored by the Ministry of Culture and melems (craft experts). Its intricate details include tadelakt, a traditional wall surfacing technique made of lime plaster and soap made from olives, zellige tiling (handcrafted clay tiles, as pictured above), and intricate brickwork. La Sultana is not only a historical hotel (with an excellent rooftop restaurant) but a work of art in itself.
