• Experience in electoral assistance, including logistics, operations and/or electoral system reform.
• Strong drafting, report-writing and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure in a multicultural and complex environment.
• Experience in institutional capacity building and working with the UN System or in a development context is desirable.
• Experience in the Pacific region is an asset.
• Fluent English is required.

Planted the Seeds of Integrity in Vanuatu 🇻🇺

What happened when teachers were given the tools to turn values like honesty, fairness and respect into lessons that could shape young minds?

For Dan Zafrir, who previously served as an International UN Volunteer and Anti-Corruption Programme Officer with UNODC in Fiji, the answer began in the classroom.

During an Education for Integrity training in Port Vila, Vanuatu, Dan worked alongside teachers to explore how integrity could move beyond a concept in a textbook and become something students could see, practise and live by every day.

The training became more than a workshop. Teachers shared stories, exchanged ideas and developed practical lesson plans rooted in their communities and culture. They explored ways to encourage ethical behaviour through positive reinforcement, storytelling and everyday classroom interactions.

And the impact was visible almost immediately.

The next morning, a school visit revealed students creating colourful artwork around honesty, fairness, kindness and ethical behaviour. Messages of integrity transformed once-bare school walls into spaces where values could be seen, discussed and celebrated.

For Dan, that moment captured the heart of his volunteering experience.

“Volunteering is fundamentally about partnership. It means arriving not as an expert, but as a collaborator, ready to listen, learn, and contribute.”

His experience with UNODC showed him that meaningful change was built through trust, relationships and shared purpose. It also pushed him beyond his comfort zone. During the mission, Dan delivered an entire workshop in French for the first time, an experience that strengthened his confidence and reminded him that volunteering was also a journey of personal growth.

The resilience of the teachers stayed with him. Many continued their commitment to education despite the devastating earthquake damage their school had experienced in December 2024. Their openness, humour and dedication reflected the strength of the communities they served.

But it was the students who left the deepest impression.

Their creativity showed that integrity did not have to be taught simply as a set of rules. When young people were given the space to explore values in ways that felt relevant to their lives, integrity could take root naturally.

Dan’s message to future UN Volunteers was simple:

“Take the leap. You don’t need perfection, only purpose. As you engage with communities, you will learn as much as you teach.”

Because change does not always begin with a major intervention.

Sometimes, it begins with a conversation.
Sometimes, with a teacher.
Sometimes, with a child drawing what honesty means to them.

And sometimes, with a volunteer willing to listen, learn and help plant the seeds.
