A key, often overlooked, fact about glucose and body weight is that when blood sugar spikes rapidly, the resulting high insulin levels block the body from burning fat.

Here are the details of this and other glucose-related facts regarding weight gain:

Insulin Resistance and Fat Storage: Consistently high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) causes the pancreas to produce more insulin, leading to insulin resistance. While cells ignore the signal to take in glucose, they still respond to the signal to store fat, making weight loss difficult and promoting fat storage, particularly in the abdomen.

The “Spike-and-Crash” Cycle: Eating high-glycemic foods causes a sharp rise in blood sugar followed by a crash, which triggers intense hunger and cravings for more sugary foods, leading to overeating and further weight gain.
Empty Calorie Storage: When glucose levels are high, the body first stores sugar in muscles and the liver as glycogen. Once these stores are full, excess glucose is converted into fat.

Late Night Snacking Impact: Consuming high-carb foods late at night can cause prolonged high blood sugar because the body is less physically active, leading to more fat storage.

Leptin Resistance: High insulin levels can lead to “leptin resistance,” which disrupts the body’s natural satiety signals, causing you to feel less full and crave more food.

For weight management, pairing carbohydrates with proteins and fats helps create a smaller, more gradual glucose spike compared to simple sugars.
