Parents and guardians are encouraged to exercise discretion and prioritize the safety of their children.

Following consultations with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) and the Fiji Meteorological Service, and after careful assessment of the latest weather forecasts, I have directed that all schools throughout Fiji remain closed today, Tuesday 16 June.

This precautionary decision has been made due to persistent heavy rainfall, strong winds, flooding, and coastal inundation affecting many parts of the country. The safety and wellbeing of our students, teachers, and school communities remain our highest priority.

I urge all parents and guardians to keep children safely at home and avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, creeks, or rivers. School Heads are requested to continue monitoring local conditions and maintain communication with their respective District Education Offices.

I thank parents, guardians, teachers, school leaders, students, and the wider public for their understanding, cooperation, and continued support during this period. The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates regarding the reopening of schools when it is safe to do so.

Following consultations with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and relevant authorities, schools will continue to operate as normal. However, I encourage parents and guardians to exercise their discretion where local weather conditions or travel routes may pose a risk to their children.

The safety of our students will always be our highest priority. I urge everyone to remain vigilant, avoid flooded roads, creeks, and rivers, and continue to monitor official weather updates and advisories.

I thank our school leaders, teachers, parents, and communities for their cooperation and commitment as we work together to provide a safe learning environment for every child.

Today, I had the opportunity to meet with Prime Health Founder Dr. Karam Singh and Operations Director Mr. Varinava Tiko at the Ministry of Education Headquarters to discuss the proposed Prime Health South Pacific project for Lautoka.

The proposal outlines the development of a modern tertiary hospital and integrated medical tourism precinct at Tavakubu Hill, aimed at enhancing access to specialised healthcare services for the people of Fiji and the wider Pacific region.

The project has the potential to strengthen our healthcare system, create employment opportunities, attract investment, and position Fiji as a regional hub for advanced medical services and medical tourism.

Discussions also covered the proposed regional referral model, supporting patients from neighbouring Pacific Island countries who require specialist treatment not readily available in their home countries.

I acknowledge the vision presented by Prime Health and welcome continued dialogue with relevant Government ministries and stakeholders as the proposal progresses through the consultation process.

Investments in health infrastructure are investments in our people, our future, and the sustainable development of our nation.

Today, I had the honour of officially opening the new $363,000 Multi-Purpose Hall at Suva Adventist Primary School in Lami.

This outstanding achievement reflects the dedication and commitment of the school management, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, parents, former students, teachers, and the wider community who worked together to make this project a reality.

The new hall will provide valuable opportunities for our 754 students through assemblies, examinations, sports, cultural activities, leadership programmes, and community events.

As Minister for Education, I remain committed to improving school facilities and ensuring every child has access to a safe and supportive learning environment. This project demonstrates what can be achieved when schools, parents, faith-based organisations, and communities work together for the benefit of our children.

Vinaka vakalevu to everyone who contributed to this important milestone.

Today, I had the honour of officially launching the 2026 Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union Deans Competition, one of the most respected and celebrated school sporting competitions in our nation.

For 87 years, the Deans Competition has played a significant role in shaping young Fijians, promoting not only sporting excellence but also discipline, leadership, teamwork, resilience, and character. It continues to be an important platform for the holistic development of our students.

I am encouraged by the growing participation in this competition, with school involvement increasing each year. This reflects the strong commitment of our schools, teachers, coaches, parents, and communities in supporting the development of our young people through sport.

The Ministry of Education remains committed to ensuring that our schools are safe, inclusive, and drug-free environments. I encourage all students to make positive choices, stay focused on their education, and uphold the values of respect, integrity, and responsibility both on and off the field.

The Deans Competition aligns strongly with the vision of the Education Bill 2025, which promotes academic achievement alongside character development, leadership, and lifelong learning.

School rugby has also provided pathways for many talented athletes to progress to higher levels of competition, including national representative teams, the Fijian Drua, and the Flying Fijians. We are proud of the opportunities this competition continues to create for our young people.

As we begin the 2026 season, I remind all schools, coaches, managers, and officials of the importance of student welfare, player safety, safeguarding standards, and proper concussion management.

I wish all participating schools, players, coaches, managers, officials, and supporters a safe, successful, and memorable season. May this year's competition showcase the very best of sportsmanship, teamwork, and excellence.

Vinaka vakalevu and all the best for the 2026 Deans Competition. 🇫🇯🏉
