Hope_Project

The HoPE team went further north for the Finnish midsummer celebrations. We spent some days near the sea in Vaasa, as well as next to one of the sawmills that produced prefabricated Finnish housing in the 1940's and 1950's.

The Kronvik sawmill participated in the war-reparations to the USSR, as well as producing houses for the national and international market. For instance, around 100 houses for the trade with Colombia in 1955 were made here. The sawmill was closed in the early 1980's after a devastating fire destroyed important parts of the production line.

For those who read swedish, there is a written history of the sawmill from 2005!

Last week, the HoPE team presented our research during the States in between: Architecture and Empire in East Europe and North Asia EAHN Thematic conference in Helsinki. We talked about how the Finnish prefabricated housing was used as cultural diplomacy in the post-war relations between Finland, Poland and the USSR.

It was a great conference! We heard really interesting papers and enjoyed the company of our fellow researchers as well as hanged out in beautiful locations!

This week, the HoPE-team went to do fieldwork in Poland. We visited the sites of Finnish houses, learnt about local culture and collected a wide range of data.

Fieldwork is one of the best parts of research - and it is impossible to understand a built environment fully without experiencing it on location! We are really happy that Koneen Säätiö - Kone Foundation has provided us with this opportunity!

The HoPE- team wishes you all Glada vappen - Hauskaa Vappua! On the 30.4, university communities and people in general celebrate the arrival of spring in Finland. ( Despite chilly temperatures and even occationally snowfall...) the team got to experience the celebrations on Vårdberget in Turku where the ÅAU male choir Brahe Djäknar and about 5000 people welcomed spring together.

We had the great pleasure to present our research at the virtual International Conference for the Conservation and Reuse of Industrial Heritage, which was organized by the Council for Conservation of Heritage Sites in Israel. The lecture which was recorded in situ in both Finland and Poland is now available at the amazing conference virtual platform (link below)....
