TEMPTATION

Temptation explores addiction through comedy. How craving does not give in and how overpowering it can be to overcome one’s own cravings. When we allow ourselves to enjoy a momentary pleasure by self-deception. Struggles of a lonely man are presented without words through mediums of physical theatre, juggling, finger theatre and string figures.

In 2010, the performance was developed during a three month residency at Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence.

Born From Quitting

The first spark for Temptation came from quitting smoking after 12 years. What began as a personal struggle slowly transformed into a collection of separate ideas slowly became a full performance almost on its own. Finger theatre, juggling, mime, clowning, and every possible trick found their place within the piece. Over the years, Temptations evolved to performance where improvisation became just as important as technical precision.

Moderni ihminen tarkastelee yksilökeskeisen ajan paineita. Teoksen keskiössä ovat raha, uskonto, luonto, valta, media sekä niiden varjopuolet, kuten köyhyys, yksinäisyys, voimattomuus ja tunne pelinappulaksi tulemisesta. Esityksessä runous ja sirkus kulkevat rinnakkain keskustellen ja välillä törmäten toisiinsa muodostaen fyysisen ja sanallisen näyttämöteoksen. Teos tarkastelee nykyihmisen asemaa yhteiskunnallisella ja henkilökohtaisella tasolla.

TOWARDS YOU

Towards you is a speechless contemporary circus performance that includes acrobatics, juggling and combinations of these two circus art forms. It is a delicate and humane story of episodes, where juggler Sakari Männistö and acrobat Marjo Ylikorva explore tensions and contrasts through movement and presence.

In 2009, the piece was further developed in collaboration with Jani Nuutinen. The music and scenography were renewed, and the rhythm and aesthetic were refined, bringing clarity to the performance’s core idea.

Balancing the Unexpected

Piece plays with perspective, how differently we perceive events and interactions with others, portable lights are used to help communicate that idea. While setting up our performance at Maison de la Jonglage in Paris in 2011, everything seemed to be in order until the prop case arrived without the sealed lead-acid batteries essential to the pieces portable lights. Finding replacements in Paris over the weekend proved extremely difficult. Eventually, we came across an auto repair shop that happened to be open and managed to buy two old moped batteries at a rather high price. During the performance, one of the batteries was carried in a waist bag that was never designed to hold such a weight. A quick solution was improvised using gaffer tape; temporary, slightly questionable, yet luckily this time functional. Having battery acid leaking on your legs whilst shining light to the other performer would for sure give a different experience of the same event.

This year marks our 20th anniversary. Over the past two decades, we’ve brought more than 100 projects and performances to life across 20+ countries. These include festivals such as the original Silence Festivals (2010–2016), Silence London (2018), Birch Festival London, ESSE Festival, as well as touring productions across rural Finland and internationally, and collaborations with world-renowned circus and music artists. We are deeply grateful to share this journey with all of you.

To celebrate, we’ll be looking back throughout the year—revisiting past productions, highlighting ongoing works, and introducing the people behind it all. It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years, shaped by the many collaborators and audiences we’ve had the privilege to work with.

COMING SOON: INFINITY VARIATIONS

Bubbling under! Infinity Variations is a one-hour stage work commissioned by the Grammy- and Emma-awarded from composer Sami Klemola. Directed and written by Aleksi Barrière, the work brings together contemporary music, movement, circus, video art, and performative installations. The eight Uusinta Ensemble musicians will be sharing the stage with circus artist Sakari Männistö, and all performers engage physically as well as musically. The piece explores repetition-related mental health phenomena such as compulsive thoughts and behaviors, drawing on Barrière’s text alongside references to thinkers including David Hume and Hannah Arendt, to examine how repetition shapes everyday human life.

Aleksi, Sakari and Sami spent a couple winter days at workshopping ideas together – and it is already looking like one not to miss! Mark your calendars – opening night in February 2026.
