In recent years, the digital space has become both a lifeline and a battlefield for LGBTQ+ people.

For many of us, social media has been the first place where we could truly breathe — connect, explore who we are, and feel seen. But lately, something has shifted. What was once a refuge has increasingly turned into a place of hostility.

Here in Finland, we’ve witnessed how some media outlets—often with the best intentions—publish stories that highlight LGBTQ+ lives. These stories should be celebrated. They should inspire dialogue, awareness, and empathy. But too often, the comment sections beneath them become arenas of hate speech, transphobia, and homophobia. And I know what I mean because I've read it and I know what media they are and I'm disappointed with some.

And the question remains: who takes responsibility for that?

⁉️Who moderates the hate, who ensures that platforms remain safe for those whose stories they profit from sharing? ⁉️

Nearly 70% of LGBTQ+ people report having experienced online hate or discrimination.

As a q***r man, I know too well that phobia and prejudice aren’t limited to real-world encounters anymore. The violence we used to face in the streets now echoes in digital spaces — faster, louder, and more cowardly, often behind fake profiles and borrowed beliefs.

Media outlets and digital platforms have a duty — not just an option — to moderate their spaces.
They must actively remove hate speech, enforce anti-discrimination policies, and protect users’ fundamental rights: dignity, equality, and the freedom to simply exist without fear.

That’s why, seeing this gap and this silence, us lifeof2men not just husbands and business partners with Medina Helsinki Communications. We created Q***rland Media — the first international q***r media born in Finland.

Straight love stories get applause. Q***r love stories get torn apart. That’s why safe LGBTQ+ media isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential. We deserve spaces where our lives and stories are told with respect, not ridicule.
