💡Now it is finally here: an MDO-PE with a matte finish!
Walki and Packaging & Specialty Plastics collaborated on an innovative mono-material MDO-PE solution without the typical high-gloss finish.
It was quite the technical challenge as MDO-PE films are heat sensitive, which makes the sealing tricky. This was solved by pairing the MDO film with Dow’s low temperature next-generation sealing technology.
The material can run on existing packaging lines and can be used for both frozen and dry food, whenever brand owners want a premium feeling to the food packaging.
As a mono-material, the MDO-PE is fully PPWR ready.

Sustainability is still often seen as a separate part of business, even though it is increasingly essential to connect it to business decisions, product development and customer needs. Understanding how to make the value of sustainability visible and communicate its benefits is something we see as both challenging and critical.

This week, we kicked off a team journey to further develop how we create value for our customers, using the UN Global Compact “Sustainability x Business” programme as a framework for discussion. Together with more than 40 other companies, we are sharing perspectives and learning from each other on how to better connect sustainability with business and customer needs. The programme will continue throughout the year.

For us, this is not just a concept. It shows up in everyday questions, for example:
• how we support customers in responding to evolving regulatory requirements
• how we better understand and communicate the value created across the value chain
• how we make sustainability benefits more visible in practice and in communication

Sustainability is not something separate from business. It is increasingly becoming a core part of how we develop our solutions and build our business.
We look forward to continuing the dialogue with our customers and partners as we move forward together.

On World Environment Day, we would like to share some reflections from our visit to Site Zero in Motala, Sweden, operated by Svensk Plaståtervinning earlier this week. 💡

The visit was a fascinating reminder of the complexity behind making plastic circular. We learned how advanced sorting technologies can identify and separate different plastic fractions at remarkable speed, but also how many challenges remain throughout the value chain.

One of the key challenges is improving household waste sorting and collection rates. Even one of Europe’s most advanced sorting facilities, Site Zero, is currently operating below its full capacity because not enough plastic packaging enters the recycling system.

At the same time, increasing collection rates alone is not enough. A significant share of material is lost in the sorting process due to packaging designs that are difficult to sort or recycle. Complex material combinations, metallic elements, labels, inks, and certain colours can impact the recyclability and prevent valuable material from returning to the market. If we want a truly circular plastics economy, we need action across the entire value chain: better sorting by consumers, better collection systems, and packaging designed for recycling from the very beginning.

We would like to thank the team at Svensk Plaståtervinning for an insightful visit and for openly sharing both the opportunities and challenges facing plastic recycling today. We left with a much deeper understanding of what it takes to turn plastic waste into a valuable resource.

In the spirit of World Environment Day, we want to remind that every correctly sorted package and every packaging designed to be recyclable has an impact on keeping materials in circulation. ♻️

🌞 Increasing on-site renewable energy at Walki Duffel

Walki has taken an important step towards increasing on-site renewable energy production at our Duffel plant. The installation of rooftop solar panels, carried out in collaboration with Greenpulse (tagging) and Insaver (tagging), was completed in mid-February, and the system is now fully connected to the grid.

With an estimated annual output of 527 MWh, around 460 MWh is expected to be used directly at the plant – covering approximately 7% of Duffel’s total electricity demand.

Looking ahead, this investment also supports compliance with upcoming regulatory requirements in Flanders, Belgium. The Flemish solar panel obligation encourages companies to utilise available rooftop space to accelerate renewable energy generation, with the first compliance deadline now set for 1 April 2026.

A concrete step forward – today and for the future. ♻️⚡
