We are generating ever more electrical and electronic equipment waste very quickly, and it’s becoming a serious problem!
What does the data say?
🚨 Europe generates the most e-waste in the world: 17.6 kg per person.
🚨 Europe has the highest collection and recycling rate (42.8% per person), but the trend is dropping.
🚨 Recycling rate of electrical and electronic waste is still the lowest among all waste streams in Europe.
Why should you care?
🔥 Toxic chemicals in e-waste (like mercury & lead) can cause brain damage and harm ecosystems.
🔥 E-waste is growing 5x faster than recycling efforts.
So, what can you do to flip this trend?
👉 Keep your phone for one more year and you can create a huge impact.
👉 Repair before replacing.
👉 Choose to buy refurbished.

Last week, our OSCAR project team and youth trainers all over Europe came together and visited a local recycling centre in Valladolid as part of the LTTA (Learning, Teaching, Training Activity). ♻️
Why use your local recycling centre?
• Safe handling of e-waste: batteries, light bulbs/ tubes, and other waste from electrical and electronic equipment are managed with proper treatment, preventing toxic leaks and pollution in air, water and soil.
• Better resource recycling: materials are separated correctly and storaged sercurecly, which boosts the recycling processes.
• Stop illegal dumping: using official facilities helps prevent landscape degradation and ecosystem contamination.
What we learned:
• In Valladolid, the demand for proper recycling is growing 10-15% every year.
• Millennials and Gen Z lead the way: your awareness is already higher. Keep spreading the word!
• Recycling centres are specialised facilities for domestic waste that needs special treatment. In Valladolid area there are six centres, typically open Mon-Sat, 9:00-19:00.
Your next steps:
1. Collect and sort: keep electronic waste separate at home.
2. Drop off responsibly at one of your local recycling centres.
3. Share this post to level up community recycling.
Let’s turn good habits into impact! 💪🌱

🌍 Exciting days in Valladolid!💡
This week, youth trainers from across Europe came together for the OSCAR Project LTTA (Learning, Teaching, Training Activity) to tackle e-waste, environmental challenges, and sustainable solutions. ♻️
The meeting featured innovative training resources, augmented reality case studies, country-specific e-waste status, policy factsheets and a visit to the local recycling centre. This youth trainer workshop in Valladolid provided experts with a platform to review and test the training materials developed so far, as well as explore ways to reach and motivate young people in the transition to e-waste sustainability within and beyond our partner countries.
We are looking forward to shaping a greener and more circular future together with you!🌱

🔌💡 What happens to your old tech?
Laptops, tablets, and phones are more than just gadgets — when they’re thrown away, they become part of one of the fastest-growing waste problems in the world: e-waste.
👨🏭 Manufacturers play a key role in changing this — by designing products that are repairable, recyclable, and responsibly made.
♻️ It’s time to demand tech that lasts!

E-waste contains toxic heavy metals 🧪 and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) ⚠️. To monitor these materials, scientists rely on powerful tools:
- X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) – A fast, non-destructive method to spot heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury directly in devices.
- Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) – The go-to technology for detecting POPs such as flame retardants, dioxins, and PCBs that can stay in the environment for decades.
- Sensor-based sorting – Modern recycling plants use smart sensors and AI 🤖 to separate valuable materials from hazardous ones, boosting recycling efficiency while protecting workers.
🌱 With OSCAR, youths can learn how technology and innovation can help us tackle e-waste responsibly — protecting both health and the planet.

🌍 The hidden cost of our devices: The economic dangers of E-Waste 🌍
Every year, the world produces over 50 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste), and the numbers keep climbing. But what many don't realize is that the true cost goes far beyond environmental damage.
💸The global economic burden from health damage linked to e-waste exposure is estimated in the billions of dollars annually.
⚖️In some regions, the health care costs and productivity losses outweigh the value recovered from improperly recycled materials.
🏥👷♂️Investing in safe recycling methods could save millions in healthcare costs and create formal jobs instead of dangerous, informal work.
At OSCAR, we advocate for better e-waste management, increased public education, and stronger regulations to protect both people and the planet.

🖥️💥 Did you know that mismanaged e-waste isn’t just bad for the environment - it’s also a serious health risk?
As part of our work with the OSCAR project, we’ve been diving into the dangers of improper e-waste disposal. A recent study highlights how people living near e-waste sites are exposed to toxic substances like heavy metals and persistent pollutants, with children and pregnant women being especially vulnerable.
The impacts? Everything from hormonal imbalances to serious developmental issues. 😟
Let’s not overlook this growing problem. Learn more about the hidden health crisis linked to e-waste and why safe management matters 👉 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8674120/
