Amazing life lessons for the great producer Rick Rubin, life lessons which not only work in the arts but through life in general. - Enjoy! Rick Rubin

Late summer is just around the corner—for me, the most magical time of year, when the light shifts, a deeper calm sets in, and warm orange hues begin to emerge. What a wonderful week hosting visitors from Denmark. I was pushed hard on the bike and spoiled with træstammer and liquorice, alongside great laughs and good red wine. Even though I’ve lived abroad for many years, Denmark still lives in my heart, and I deeply cherish the relationships I hold in that little kingdom.

This picture goes back to 1999 in my very first demo studio in Copenhagen NV. Aqua had just shown the world what kind of magic you could pull out of a Roland JV-1080, and we were all hooked.
That’s my good friend Michael Bondee patiently crouching on the floor, trying to explain to me how a synth and its LFO actually worked…
(Spoiler: I still don’t really get all that modulation stuff today! 😂)
Back then, Cubase was pure MIDI. We fought with Roland hard drive recorders that hopefully stayed in sync, static noise, crackling cables, and patchbays that required miles of soldering in the back. Later came years of Pro Tools and multi-thousand-dollar rigs with cheap plastic mixers and heavy drives.
Looking at this photo today just makes me smile. Back then, I looked up to producers like Enigma, who built his legendary studio on a mountain in Spain, thinking: “Wow… imagine, someday.”
Fast forward to today: I’ve been using LUNA on a Mac Studio for 3 years now—right here on a hillside in Spain.
Without needing a million-dollar budget, I have a virtual studio packed with the exact hardware classics I grew up using in traditional studios. I know what every single one of those units weighs, how much power they draw, and how painful it was to fix ground hums on an analog console. And now? I just pull up a UA plugin, and it immediately tastes and feels like that magic retro sound.
Cheers to the journey, to technology finally catching up with our dreams, and to great friends who took the time to explain LFOs in a small room in Copenhagen! AQUA Roland Yamaha Music USA Universal Audio
