Eid al-Adha, the second of two great Muslim festivals, is a celebration to commemorate the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son out of obedience to Allah. Before the sacrifice goes ahead, God provides a lamb to be sacrificed instead. Nowadays, animals, typically goats or lambs, are still sacrificed to mark the occasion.
The celebration also coincides with the end of the Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca (Saudi Arabia), in which millions of people participate every year.
The festival is marked by special prayers and sharing the food with family, friends, neighbours and the poor.
