Metropol Parasol
One of the largest timber structures in the world, designed by Jürgen Mayer and Arup, seems to emerge from the ground of La Encarnación square in Seville, Spain to reactivate this long abandoned urban void caused by the demolition of a market.
The mushroom-like canopy stretches 70 by 150 meters and is raised up to approximately 26 meters, making it a walkway to observe the city from a height just slightly taller than its surrounding. Under the canopy are a new marketplace, a restaurant, a square for performances, and a basement to view the Roman and Andalusian archaeological remains. In order to avoid damaging these remains, the whole canopy rests on just six supports.

Blue Temple of Wat Paknam-Khamer-Nhu Chantaburi
-
The blue ceramics-covered temple, located in the Chantaburi province of Thailand, was built to replace the old temple which was worn down due to it’s site near the sea. The temple and its community together decided that in order to prevent this corrosion from happening again, the new temple would be cladded with ceramics which would help shield the concrete surface and also reduce the maintenance cost of repainting. The limited color palette of blue and white was inspired from the ancient porcelain pottery.

Nakagin Capsule Tower, designed by Kisho Kurokawa, built in 1972 was considered as a great experiment of the Japanese Metabolism movement. The tower consists of 140 individual 4x2.5 meters capsules that could be replaced and plugged out of the two central concrete cores. The idea of prefabrication and modular system were explored both for the exterior and the interior furnishing.
Our suspection is that the gaps between each capsules and the overhanging spaces had become great home for the birds. The whole tower was then covered by net to prevent this, but it had aged the building.
The rooms are available for reservation on Airbnb.

MONOCHROMATIC SURFACE
"Blue is the invisible becoming visible. Blue has no dimensions, it is beyond the dimensions of which other colours partake," - Yves Klein, artist
The reduction of colors and enlargement of scale have made the invisible details visible and the surfaces of architecture gain spatial quality through the lost sense of dimensions.
Imagine a mini-you walking on these surfaces!
