Bocchoris: Mallorca’s Forgotten Ancient City

When Rome conquered the Balearic Islands in 123 BC, Bocchoris was already more than 1,500 years old.

Believed to have stood in the Vall de Bóquer near Pollença, this ancient settlement holds clues to a chapter of Mallorca’s history that is still being uncovered.

In the latest episode of the In Mallorca Podcast, Lucy Hawkins speaks with Mallorcan-born Oxford archaeologist Joel Bellviure about Bocchoris, life on the island before and after the Roman conquest, and Mallorca’s connections across the ancient Mediterranean.

Watch the latest episode of the In Mallorca Podcast on our YouTube channel.

To encounter the discoveries in person, visit A la recerca de Bocchoris (“In Search of Bocchoris”) at the Museu de Pollença, on until 4 October.

The Ramellet Tomato | Mallorca’s Traditional Tomato

What makes the tomàtiga de ramellet one of Mallorca’s most distinctive foods?

Selected over generations by Balearic farmers, this traditional tomato is prized for its ability to thrive with little irrigation and remain sound for months after harvesting. The tomatoes are traditionally fastened by their stalks into hanging strings known as enfilalls, then stored in a dry, shaded and well-ventilated place.

Its most iconic role is in pa amb oli, a staple of Mallorcan cuisine. Cut the tomato in half, rub the ripe flesh directly onto pa de pagès (traditional Mallorcan rustic bread) and finish with Mallorcan extra virgin olive oil and sea salt. Simple, local and unmistakably Mallorcan.

Discover its history, the meaning behind its name and the traditional way to enjoy it.

Save this guide for your next visit to Mallorca and share it with someone who loves discovering authentic local food.
