This is an issue for many long-term expats in your position. We are currently looking at the options to draw down the pension to find the most tax efficient way in Spain. Recently I dealt with a case where the client was happy to draw down and pay approximately 20% percent on the capital gain element and re-invest tax efficiently here, as it was way cheaper than 40% IHT in the UK, and all future growth can be protected.

I get a lot of enquiries this time of year from people who are counting down to their summer holidays and want to know if they could really make retiring to the Costa del Sol work for them, from a financial perspective.

If you’re dreaming of making that move and living here full time, rather than just having a few short weeks a year, then download our free Moving to Spain Guide.

It contains loads of practical information about steps you need to take and things you need to think about before you make the move, and the advice in there could save you thousands!

🏍️ Recently I had the pleasure a week ago of going to the Moto GP race in Mugello with a few of my colleagues.
🏍️It was a fantastic trip!
🏍️I cannot describe the beauty of Tuscany and the lovely city of Florence where we were staying and the racing was fantastic.

If things quieten down for you during the summer months and you have a little more time, I urge you to schedule some of that time for creating your folder. It’s something I’ve helped many clients do over the years and feel is so important.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 is a single file (digital or physical) where you keep all of your important personal and financial information together. It allows easy access to these documents in the event that you are no longer around to help. It is really important to have it in place when one family member takes the lead on the family finances; this includes paying bills, managing accounts and storing documents. Even if that is not the case, it is an important exercise.

I’ve written an article about this and it includes a link to download your copy of our template which makes it even easier to do. Please put aside some time to do this, your family will really thank you for it.

This is a real highlight of the year on the Costa del Sol and an opportunity to see the Spanish heart of this cosmopolitan destination. It’s taking place next week, from the 8-14 June and is the best party of the year!

We like the Day Feria from 13.00-21.00, where you can have a drink, get something to eat and enjoy the atmosphere and music. If you want to party hard, or love rides, then the Night Feria is a better fit for you, which starts around 20.00, but really gets going much later and continues to the early hours of the morning.

I was delighted to appear on the Upsticks.es Podcast last month to talk with Chris about UK Investments and Pensions when you move to Spain.

We spoke about how to manage your UK investments, pensions, ISAs, and property to avoid costly tax traps. We cover the key differences between the UK and Spanish tax years, capital gains considerations, and tax-efficient ways to structure your savings before becoming a Spanish tax resident.

We hope it will help you to get your finances sorted before making the move to Spain.

Communication is the key | The Spectrum IFA Group 28/05/2026

I provide clients with knowledge and understanding of what we are doing, what can happen, and what is most likely to happen. Essentially, a lot of time is taken at outset to inform and educate them in the solution being proposed, warts and all. This means people don’t tend to worry about their portfolios because they know they are in safe hands. With all the other stresses in life, this is something you cannot put a price on, particularly in retirement.

You can find out more about the importance of communication on my website, and get in touch if you’re at all worried about your financial arrangements.

Spain’s 2026 extraordinary regularisation for migrants - Age in Spain 25/05/2026

There’s a lot of talk about Spain’s bold move to “regularise” undocumented migrants and give them a chance to become correctly registered. It could help UK nationals that have overstayed their 90 days period whilst working in Spain. However, the application period is short, and if you are planning to submit an application, you only have just over a month to get it in.

Here’s a really good article from Age in Spain explaining it all.

Spain’s 2026 extraordinary regularisation for migrants - Age in Spain This process is not for people who already have legal residency The 2026 extraordinary regularisation is specifically for people currently living in Spain without a valid residence permit. If you already hold a TIE, NIE with residency rights, or any form of valid authorisation, you are not eligible....

A: With any products like this that I offer my clients, one of the requirements is that the provider has a fiscal representation in Spain. What that means is they are responsible for the tax due when you take some money from your policy, and this is paid directly to the Hacienda by them. The certificate you will have received at the end of the year is all you need to give to your accountant here, to show there is nothing further to do.
