Court of the Lions, commissioned by the Nasrid Sultan Muhammad V of Granada between 1362 and 1391. The fountain consists of a twelve-sided polygonal basin in white marble sourced from Macael, Almería, Spain. The basin is supported by twelve stylized marble lions. Arranged in a circle, water fills the central basin and then emerges from the mouths of the lions. It is a masterpiece of Islamic sculpture and hydraulic engineering. The Muslims in al-Andalus—primarily from North Africa, including Berber communities, as well as the broader Middle Eastern world—brought with them rich cultural, artistic, and symbolic traditions, in which the lion represents power and strength.
