✅ On March 4–5, we hosted the final meeting of the iToBoS project, marking the end of four years of research focused on improving early melanoma detection.
Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme, iToBoS has developed an AI-powered full-body scanner that combines high-resolution, contactless skin images with medical, demographic, and genomic data.
The result? More accurate, personalized, and explainable diagnoses to support healthcare professionals in the fight against skin cancer.
This project has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of 20 leading partners from research, industry, and medicine, with clinical studies carried out in Barcelona, Trieste, and Brisbane.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in this incredible step forward in precision medicine and melanoma detection!

Members of the Medical Imaging Lab returned from the 27th International MICCAI Conference held in Marrakesh with exceptional results!
From the brain imaging research team, Valeriia Abramova, a 3rd-year PhD student, obtained the 1st place in the meningioma radiotherapy segmentation task in the International Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) Challenge 2024.
Clara Lisazo and Hasna R. Hamadache, both 1st-year PhD students, took part in the Topology-Aware Anatomical Segmentation of the Circle of Willis (TopCoW) challenge. They won 1st place in three tasks, each bringing home adorable Swiss toy cows from Zurich as awards. Additionally, Hasna R. Hamadache participated in the Fetal Tissue Annotation Challenge (FeTA), where she achieved 2nd place.
Ricardo Montoya-del-Angel Angel and Hasna R. Hamadache also competed in the Triphasic-Aided Liver Lesion Segmentation challenge (TriALS), placing 2nd in the Non-Contrast Lesion Segmentation task and earning a prize of $200.
Cansu Yalçın, a 2nd-year PhD student, won 4th place in the MBH-Seg: Multi-Class Brain Hemorrhage Segmentation in Non-Contrast CT challenge, receiving a $200 cash award.
Kaouther Mouheb, Ricardo Montoya-del-Angel and Nohemi Sofia Leon Contreras, MAIA master graduates, won the MICCAI Educational Challenge with their submission named Introduction to Diffusion Model, winning the money award of 300$.
The Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Interventions (MICCAI) conferences have long been a global gathering for researchers to showcase the latest advancements in medical imaging, shaping the future of AI applications in healthcare and setting new trends.
Congratulations to the entire lab for such outstanding achievements!
