Here is why your dog's nails should not be too long!

Health and Comfort Risks

* Painful pressure: Long nails push back into the nail bed when walking.
* Altered posture: Dogs shift their weight backward to avoid discomfort.
* Joint damage: Abnormal walking positions cause strain on hips and spine.
* Deformed paws: Chronic long nails can permanently change paw structure.

Injury and Infection Risks.

* Painful tears: Long nails easily catch on carpets, roots, or blankets.
* Inward growth: The dewclaws can curl around and pierce the skin.
* Infections: Torn or ingrown nails allow bacteria to enter the paw.
* Reduced traction: Long nails make dogs slip and slide on smooth floors.

The "Quick" Problem

* Elongated quicks: The internal blood vessel grows longer alongside the nail.
* Difficult trimming: Longer quicks make it harder to shorten the nails safely later.

Heatstroke in dogs is a life-threatening emergency

Watch for excessive, frantic panting,

Thick/sticky drool, and a change in gum color (bright red or pale/gray).

As the condition worsens, dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhea, unsteadiness, seizures, or collapse.

Recognizing the exact signs can save your dog's life.

Symptoms are generally grouped by severity:

Early Warning Signs (Heat Exhaustion) Excessive panting: Rapid, heavy, or noisy open-mouthed breathing.

Drooling: Excess saliva that often becomes thick and sticky.

Agitation: Pacing, restlessness, or constantly seeking shade or water.

Advanced, Life-Threatening Stages

Neurological Distress: Stumbling, stumbling, staggering, or signs of confusion (dizziness).

Collapse: Inability to stand or utter unresponsiveness.

Severe Complications: Muscle tremors, seizures, or coma.

What To Do:

If you suspect your dog has heatstroke, act immediately:

Move them to a shaded or air-conditioned area right away.

Cool them down slowly by wetting their fur with cool (not ice-cold) water.

Offer water, but do not force them to drink.

Seek veterinary care immediately. Even if your dog seems to recover, they require urgent monitoring for internal organ damage.

The Danger of Grass Foxtails (Espiguillas) for Pets in Spain, grass foxtails (locally known as espiguillas or espigas) pose a severe and dangerous threat to pets, especially during the dry season. Due to the hot Spanish climate, wild grasses – such as wall barley – quickly dry out into hard, golden-yellow needles. These seeds have microscopic barbs, meaning they can only move in one direction: deeper into the animal's body.Critical Danger Zones and SymptomsEars: Foxtails easily crawl into the ear canal, which can lead to a perforated eardrum. Symptoms: Sudden head shaking, tilting the head to one side, or whining when touched.Between the Toes: The sharp tips easily pierce the thin skin between the paw pads. Once inside, the seed can migrate up the leg under the skin. Symptoms: Constant paw licking, limping, or a painful swelling/abscess between the toes.Eyes: A seed trapped behind the eyelid can severely scratch or puncture the cornea. Symptoms: Squinting, excessive tearing, or rapid swelling of the eye.Nose: Pets can inhale these seeds while sniffing around in tall grass. Symptoms: Violent, sudden sneezing fits, sometimes accompanied by nasal discharge or blood.Skin and Coat: Especially in long-haired or curly-coated breeds (like the Spanish Water Dog), foxtails catch onto the fur and can burrow directly through the skin, causing deep, painful infections and fistulas.Prevention and Immediate ActionAvoid High-Risk Areas: Stay away from unmaintained fields with tall, dried-out, golden-yellow grass.Post-Walk Inspection: Thoroughly check your pet after every walk. Pay close attention to the paws (between the toes), ears, groin, and underarms.Trim the Fur: Keep the hair between the paw pads and around the ears trimmed short during the summer months.See a Vet Immediately: If you suspect a foxtail has entered your pet's body, do not wait. These seeds do not dissolve and must often be removed under sedation by a veterinarian using specialized tools.
