Today is World Thrombosis Day.
I’ve faced multiple thromboses, survived pulmonary embolisms, and I’m still standing.
1 in 4 doesn’t make it — I’m grateful to be among the survivors.
Strength isn’t just in sport. Sometimes it’s in surviving.
My heart was heavy when I realized I wouldn’t make it to the WheelWod CrossFit Games in Las Vegas. But everything turned around and I found myself filled with joy, gratitude, and the warmest welcome at WODCELONA. More than 1,500 athletes came together on the CrossFit floor to prove that this is the most inclusive CrossFit event in the world. I had the chance to meet amazing people — including my guide Sol, who went above and beyond to make everything as comfortable as possible for me.But none of this would have been possible without my incredible support system at home — my husband Mike Willems ,my kids, and all the love and encouragement I’ve received in the weeks leading up to this. A huge thank you to Aitana for thinking in solutions, and to Rehband for standing behind me as an adaptive athlete, providing all the products I needed to show up strong.To all the kind donors who supported me through the Yvonne van Gennip Talent Fonds crowdfunding. I cannot thank you enough. Yvonne, you’ve been my childhood hero, and your support made this journey truly special.And finally, to all the athletes I met here in Barcelona — too many to name, but together you created the unforgettable vibe of WODCELONA. A breathtaking beachside venue, amazing energy and memories I’ll carry with me forever. 🫶🏻Words will never be enough to capture what this meant to me.This was truly something special. 💙✨

Van nul naar wereldkampioen – en weer opnieuw opbouwen
Mijn naam is Esther de Roo (Instagram: E.D.S.ther). In 2010 kreeg ik de diagnose Ehlers Danlos syndroom. Destijds kon ik nauwelijks lopen en functioneren. Dankzij Charles Verschuren van CrossFit Gymert lukte het mij om opnieuw op te bouwen.
De weg hierna was niet makkelijk: trombose, long embolieën, post-trombotisch syndroom, een spierziekte die mijn rechterarm beperktte, autonome dysfunctie, etc. Ik werd arbeidsongeschikt en moest telkens opnieuw revalideren en opbouwen.Zo ontstond mijn motto:
“CrossFit is mijn baan. Ik verdien er mijn leven mee.”
Ondanks mijn beperkingen, beleefde ik in 2025 hoogtepunten: ik werd Europees en Wereldkampioen HYROX voor adaptieve atleten. Maar recent kreeg ik weer een trombose in mijn rechterbeen, waardoor ik mijn deelname dit jaar aan de CrossFit Games in Las Vegas moest annuleren.
Gelukkig kan ik wél deelnemen aan WODCELONA in Barcelona, een prachtig evenement voor adaptieve atleten. Maar deelnemen op topniveau brengt veel extra kosten met zich mee: fysiotherapie, aangepaste voeding, rust, begeleiding… Omdat CrossFit en HYROX geen olympische status hebben, moeten wij dit zelf financieren.
Daarom heb ik een crowdfunding bij de Yvonne van Gennip Foundation gestart. Ik vraag jullie steun, zodat ik het strijdtoneel kan betreden en kan laten zien dat Plan B ook kan werken – dat er altijd mogelijkheden zijn, zelfs als het eerste plan niet lukt.
