The name Los Abrigos comes from the many sheltered coves that are found on its coastline. This coastal settlement covers an area of 6.52 km² and includes the protected natural area of the Montaña Roja Special Reserve.


The Los Abrigos area is one of the most used ports in the south of the island, especially in the early years of colonisation in the 16th century, and was originally known as Los Abadejos Bay. Los Abrigos is considered a coastal village located in a picturesque sea strip that attracts tourists for its beauty and the charm of the surrounding nature.

The main feature of Los Abrigos is the sunshine that accompanies visitors almost all year round, allowing them to enjoy pleasant temperatures and delicious ice-cream from local cafes.

Autumn in the Canary Islands is a time of colourful festivities and warm climate.

Romería de la Virgen de la Peña is the most important event in Fuerteventura and one of the oldest in the Canaries, dating back to the 19th century. Every third Saturday in September, locals take part in a procession, the main event of the romería. The faithful walk to the Vega de Río Palmas, to the chapel, many on foot or on donkeys and camels, singing traditional songs with musical accompaniment. There are also verbenas, music festivals and card games. Don't miss the celebrations on 21 September.

On 12 October, Spain celebrates Spain Day, which is also known as Columbus Day (Día de la Hispanidad). This holiday symbolises the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and is celebrated as a day of cultural unity among Spanish-speaking countries. Various activities take place on this day, including parades, concerts and cultural events. Madrid hosts a large military parade that attracts many spectators. The holiday also serves as a reminder of Spain's rich cultural heritage and its influence on the world.

On 1 November, Spain celebrates All Saints' Day (Día de Todos los Santos). This holiday is dedicated to the memory of all saints and the dead, and is a time when people remember their loved ones who have passed away. Traditionally on this day, Spaniards visit cemeteries, decorate graves with flowers, especially chrysanthemums, and leave memorial signs. Various gastronomic traditions are popular on this day, such as the preparation of sweets such as ‘huesos de santo’ (sweets in the shape of bones), which symbolise the memory of the deceased.

On 29-30 November, Fiesta de San Andres is one of the locals' favourite holidays. On this day, it is traditional to roll wine barrels down the streets to the ocean for washing. Children and adults also ride special sliding boards like slides. It's not just a celebration, but a real extravaganza of flavours and emotions! The streets are filled with the aromas of young wine, as well as delicious traditional dishes and roasted chestnuts.

On the south coast of Tenerife, in the small village of Abades, there is a mysterious sanatorium. Consisting of more than 40 buildings, the sanatorium was conceived in 1943 as a refuge for those suffering from the terrible disease leprosy.



Architect José Enrique Regalado Moreno put his soul into creating this place, realising his visions in every brick and every wall. However, scientific advances in the treatment of the disease made the sanatorium unnecessary. The project was left unfinished and never used for its intended purpose.

Now, to get to this amazing place, you have to overcome the way on foot, as the road to it is closed. Although the sanatorium is privately owned, many brave people venture down the shady, muddy path between the abandoned and dilapidated buildings.

Locals tell excited tales of strange sounds coming from inside the church and its surroundings, making the place even more mysterious and attractive to adventurers. The size of the sanatorium is amazing and the number of barracks and blocks, including the huge concrete church, takes us back in time to times that seem alien and distant.
