BIYA Environmental Science Program
BIYA is an environmental education program that raises awareness about global environmental issues.
The corals of the Gulf of Aqaba are unique in their resilience to global environmental stressors. They offer hope for the survival of coral reefs around the world in the face of climate change. However, they are under immense pressure from local stressors, such as various types of pollution, rapid coastal development and over-fishing. Conservation and promotion of sustainable uses of these reefs are primary objective.

Terrifying and rather sad.....
A new study just came out about the state of the corals in the Red Sea's Gulf of Aqaba, conducted by Eilatβs Interuniversity Institute for Marine Sciences. Water temperature off Eilat's coast hit 29.1 degrees Celsius (84.4Β°F) at one monitoring station, which is the highest temperature recorded since the monitoring began in 2004. Also found: alarming amounts of garbage. The study indicated how 22% of the Gulf's coral reefs were severely degraded after a record-breaking storm hit Eilat earlier in 2020. On the positive side, the scientists believe the reefs of Eilat will manage to recover naturally if left undisturbed. Eilat has banned single use plastic, but come on folks, we can do better! Let's leave those corals in peace to heal. No oil spills, pollution, garbage or touching the corals!

If only people would realize how valuable reefs are ( not just commercially for diving) maybe the world's reefs would be in better shape.

Dreadful.
Last nights brutal killing of 1428 white side dolphins was an illegal hunt.
The grindforeman of the district was not informed.
And had he been, he says he wouldnΒ΄t have allowed the slaughter to happen.
Instead another grindforeman made the decision, a decision he was not allowed to make.
It is on him that 1428 dolphins were driven for over 40 km.
He made the call for them to be slaughtered even though there werenΒ΄t enough people or boats to handle all the dolphins.
He allowed for a complete chaotic massacre to happen.
And he has been reported to the police by locals for this.
A man like that can not have the responsability to decide the fate of migrating whales and dolphins again.
The only right thing to do, is to strip him of his authority.
And to ban all future hunts on white sided dolphins.
We applaud the locals who are using their voices to speak up against this, and we ask you to not back down.
You can create change here.
The dolphins need you to.
