CEPO: FUNDING GAPS THREATEN KEY DEADLINE FOR DECEMBER 2026 ELECTION.
An activist raised concerns regarding government spending, stating that lack of resources for the national Election Commission (NEC) may lead to missed deadline in June.
The community Empowerment for progress Organisation (CEPO) Executive Director, Edmund Yakani, spoke on Saturday, April 18.
He stated that the electoral process faces challenge even if legal framework are in place. He noted that without money, the commission cannot perform it's tasks for the December 2026 Vote .
Yakani identify two dates in June 2026 that are essential for the process: June 30 , the date the political parties council must release the list of parties eligible to participate.
The CEPO director stated that funding elections is a duty of the government.he reported that the NEC has requested money for essential tasks but has not received the resources.
Yakani stated that the government allocates funds to prioritise not related to the election while preparation for the vote remains behind schedule. He warmed that the absence of money creates conditions that could delay the process or impact the credibility of the vote.
Yakani urged leaders to follow procedures and reach an agreement on legal amendments. He called on the government to provide the NEC with the resources required to fulfill it's mandate and ensure the election occurs as scheduled.
