Persian Calligraphy

Photos from Studio Homami's post 20/11/2025

My recent visit to القلم Al Qalam cultural institution (.co) in Cairo!

This brilliant space is dedicated to spreading and teaching the beauty of Arabic/Persian calligraphy and Islamic decoration.

It's equipped with a design studio, a library of calligraphy books, a shop for calligraphy supplies, and art gifts, and a meeting point for creatives.

Located in the heart of historic Cairo, overlooking Sultan Hassan and Refai mosques.

The Phoenix (Quqnūs ققنوس)
Gold ink on paper
2021
Moalla script calligraphy

Quqnūs lives a thousand years, and when a thousand years pass and its life comes to an end, it gathers a lot of firewood and sits on top of it and begins to compose and flutter its wings like fire from its wings, it falls into the wood and burns itself with the wood, but from the ashes of its co**se, its offsprings come out.

The Phoenix (1941 poem by Nima Nima Yushij) was published first in the midst of world war II and is considered as the "beginning of the modernist Persian poetry”.

In the beginning of the twentieth century, Yushij stamped a new pattern on Persian poetry, commonly known today as She'r-e Nimaa'i (شعر نیمایی 'Nima poetry'), and released it from its long-standing tradition.

Besides tending to social symbolism, Yushij reaching the pinnacle of Romanticism in Phoenix has been a decisive factor in creating a new path for Persian poetry.

The poet uses an old myth and introduces himself as a Quqnūs that must burn in order for his thoughts and poems to be spread among the people and for other birds to spread it in the world.

Comprehending Love, and the Incompetence of Words in Conveying What It Means:

Rumi doesn't speak of romantic love. Rumi and other scholars like Shakespeare agree on the issue that love is impossible to comprehend and to describe verbally:
This is not my speech, it is love’s,
In this issue, I am one of the ignorant (Dīvân-e Shams, 1520)
"Language is something of this world, and whatever there is in this world is unable to get through to the other… language lacks the capacity to reveal secrets… where the heart is heaven, language is hell, and fails to express the
truth" (Fotuhi 1385:343).

Rumi calls himself an unknowing, claiming that it was love that made him write these verses. He writes for love without knowing anything about love:
Like a pen between the fingers of love;
Selfless, forced to move about
On rolls and rolls of paper,
Unaware of what I write (Dīvâne Shams, 1487, Trans. By Dashti, p. 220)
