The Herbal Wines of Ancient Egypt in The Tomb of the Scorpion King 05/09/2017

For the Ancient Egyptians, Abydos was one of the holiest sites in the world. As the cult center of the god Osiris and gateway to the underworld (believed to lie under the nearby hills), it was a popular place of pilgrimage and burial.
Look here what has been discovered in Abydos !

"The mystery of his life still eludes us ... the shadows move but the dark is never quite dispersed." - Howard Carter.

It is a strange irony that despite the fabulous richness of Tutankhamun's tomb, the king remains very much a mystery.

Details of his life must be teased from hints and scraps and information on his rule is still largely speculation.

Pictured is Tutankhamun's solid gold, innermost coffin from his burial in the Valley of the Kings.

Another 360° marvel from Egypt VR. The Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak Temple - one of the greatest architectural wonders of the ancient world. (Click and drag to look around).
Here you can see the central nave of the Hall, lined by a double row of 12 grand columns some 20 metres high, with wide, bell-shaped capitals representing the feathery blossoms of flowering papyrus stalks.
Although today it is open to the sky, try to imagine the Great Hypostyle Hall in its heyday, cloaked by massive ceiling slabs which kept the space in a sombre semidarkness, split by a few beams of dusty sunshine.
Most of them are gone now, but the spaces between the columns once bustled with statues of kings and gods. In the centre of this image you can see one of a pair of statues thought to be King Amenmesse, the grandson of Ramesses II who completed the Great Hypostyle Hall.
In the background is the obelisk of Thutmose I. His were the first obelisks erected at Karnak Temple, some 200 years before Ramesses’ time.

The tomb that leaves you breathless.
Nefertari. "To the modern ear, the sound of her name evokes visions of unrivalled splendour, surpassing beauty and supreme power." - John K. McDonald.
For over 20 years Nefertari was the beloved first queen of the great Ramesses II and mother of at least six of her husband's many, many children.
No small part of Nefertari's fame comes from her brilliantly-decorated tomb (QV66) in the Valley of the Queens in western Thebes. It is one of the true treasures of ancient Egypt and is renowned for its amazing beauty.
Was there true love between husband and wife? We'll never really know, but Ramesses did lavish upon his wife some endearing epithets: "Lady of Charm", "Sweet of Love", and "Rich of Praise".

Hair of Queen Tiye aka the Elder Lady
The so-called “Elder Lady” has survived more than three millennia with a full head of auburn hair falling across her shoulders. A strand of this hair was matched to a lock of hair that had been discovered in King Tutankhamun’s tomb. The keepsake had been kept in a tiny coffin inscribed to his beloved grandmother Queen Tiye, and DNA from the hair and the mummy proved the relationship in 2010

The Egyptian dead as birds, a form they took when they wanted to go forth and see the sun and the living world. And they are very cute...
