Discussions highlighted the strategic significance of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region as a critical maritime corridor for global trade, energy flows and supply chains, and explore ways to transform the region from a source of threats and instability into a platform for cooperation and shared prosperity.
The side event also addressed the impact of regional conflicts and evolving dynamics on the stability of the Red Sea, and the broader region - particularly the war in Gaza and the situation in conflict-affected littoral states of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, such as Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. It further emphasized the importance of a security-development nexus approach in advancing regional stability and safeguarding global trade flows and supply chains.
It also examined ways to strengthen coordination among international partners, regional actors, and littoral states to ensure that recovery efforts are coherent, inclusive, and aligned with the broader vision of sustainable peace and stability. In addition, it explored practical pathways to effectively operationalize regional initiatives - including the Suez–Red Sea Economic and Maritime Initiative (StREAM) - in support of sustainable peace and development, and long-term regional resilience.

CCCPA concluded its training titled “Precarious Journeys: Enhancing the Understanding of Mobility Patterns in Africa” that took place between 18-22 January 2026. The training was organized with the support of the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Ministerie van Asiel en Migratie.
The training brought together 31 national officials and front-line officers from ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Defense, Justice, Social Affairs, Gender, Women and Children as well as representatives from the National Committees on Migration and the Coast Guard Units from Egypt, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Chad, Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Sudan, and Yemen.
Over the five days, the sessions analyzed the different dynamics of migration across Africa, with particular focus on the proliferation of illicit activities by criminal networks exploiting vulnerabilities along major migratory routes. The training focused on strengthening knowledge about the national and reginal legal frameworks to prevent and combat challenges related to migration. In addition, the sessions discussed the investigative capacities, the prosecutorial mechanisms, and cross-border cooperation frameworks that should ensure timely, effective, and rights-compliant judicial outcomes for both victims and perpetrators. Furthermore, the sessions examined structural and operational gaps related to regional judicial/legal cooperation, identifying practical avenues to establish formal and informal coordination mechanisms to accelerate judicial proceedings and enhancing cross-border legal cooperation.
The training underscored the importance of parallel financial investigations and anti-money laundering frameworks as core operational instruments for dismantling organized criminal networks, particularly through the identification, tracing, confiscation of illicit financial flows and assets recovery.
The training features the participation of a wide range of national and international experts and facilitators, including representatives from the Egyptian National Coordinating Committee on Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons, the Egyptian Ministry of Justice, and the Egyptian General Prosecution Office. In addition, the sessions featured the participation of the International Organization for Migration IOM EGYPT.

It is with the greatest sorrow and the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our dear former colleague, Salma Kadry.
Salma began at CCCPA in 2015 as a Researcher in the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) department and left to pursue a Master’s degree at Ghent University in 2017; she returned to CCCPA in 2019 and lead the Climate, Peace and Development unit for close to 4 years before she joined CGIAR. During her time at CCCPA, Salma left a lasting impact that will remain with us forever. She was among the most decent and genuine people one could ever meet, and her warmth was felt by everyone around her.
Salma was a brilliant and passionate professional who consistently went above and beyond in her work. She was a mentor to many, generously sharing her knowledge and equipping her team and colleagues with the tools they needed to grow and advance.
Salma was kind, incredibly strong, and though she fought a courageous battle with cancer, her faith and spirit were never broken.
Rest in peace, dear Salma. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
