Q: How does Allah 'guide whom He wills and lead astray whom He wills'…?

A: Allah 'azawajal 'guides' all of His creation by showing them the Truth. Whoever accepts His guidance and enters into Islam, Allah 'guides' them by enabling and assisting them to follow the Straight Path and making faith beloved in their hearts. And whoever chooses to reject Islam and turn away from the path of guidance, Allah leaves them to their own desires and to the shaytaan; and has thereby led them astray - not because Allah wanted misguidance for him all along, but rather as a consequence of his own choice not to follow the truth when it came to him.

'And as for Thamud, We 'guided' them, but they preferred blindness over guidance..'

From this we understand that guidance (al-hidaayah) is of two types:

1 - General guidance which Allah gives to all of humanity by sending them Books and Messengers to show them the Straight Path and make the Truth clear to them.

2- Specific guidance whereby Allah enables and assists a person to follow the Truth and be steadfast upon it after accepting it, by making faith beloved to them in their heart and making disbelief and sins despised to them and increasing them in guidance.

'And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.' (Qur'an 47:17)

Al-Bukhaari (6035) and Muslim (2321) narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Verily the best of you are the best of you in manners.”

An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

This hadith offers encouragement to develop a good attitude and highlights the virtue of the one who has it, for it is a trait of the Prophets and close friends of Allah, may He be exalted. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: The definition of a good attitude is to do acts of kindness, refrain from harming others and to show a cheerful countenance. Al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad said: It means mixing with people in a gentle and cheerful manner, being friendly and compassionate towards them, being forbearing towards them and overlooking their mistakes, being patient with them at times of difficulty, not being arrogant or putting oneself above them, and avoiding harshness, anger and censure.

There are those who believe that life ends with death and that there is no resurrection, no gathering, no accounting, no scales, no records of deeds, no Paradise and no Hellfire! If that was the case then whoever wanted to oppress would oppress without consequences, and whoever wanted to steal the wealth of others would steal without any (consequences). Rather let every tyrant and oppressor, or even sinful believer know that after death there is resurrection, and questioning….

For the life of this world is temporary and limited and will come to an end so that after that everyone stands before Allah, the Exalted to be questioned about every great and minor matter…

One of those who denied the resurrection was al-'Aas bin Waa'el al-Sahmi – who comes to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) holding some bones on his hands which he crumbles in front of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) and then scatters into the air and says: "Will Allah give life to this after it has decayed?!" He (صلى الله عليه و سلم) responded: "Yes, Allah will cause you to die then resurrect you and the enter you into the Hellfire."

Upon this incident the following verses of the Qur'aan were revealed:

Does man not consider that We created him from a [mere] s***m-drop - then at once he is a clear adversary (to his Creator)?

And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation. He says, "Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?"

Say, "He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing."

[It is] He who made for you from the green tree, fire, and then from it you ignite.

(i.e. the fire in this world is a sign for the Hellfire in the Hereafter)

Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator.

Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, "Be!" and it is!

So Glorified is He and Exalted above all that they associate with Him, and in Whose Hands is the dominion of all things, and to Him you shall be returned.

(The Qur'aan 36:77-83)

Summarized Explanation of Selected Verses in the Qur'an:

Say (O Messenger): "Who provides for you from the sky (by sending down the rain) and from the earth (by the crops that grow on it, and the minerals it contains)? Or who controls hearing and sight (i.e. who can possess it, and create the ears and eyes with this amazing quality and in this peculiar nature so that you are able to benefit from them)? And who brings out the living from the dead (e.g. the human-being from something lifeless like the s***m drop, and the bird from an egg, and the plants from a seed); and brings out the dead from the living (like the egg from the chicken and the s***m-drop from the human-being?) And who disposes (i.e. decrees and decides) the affairs (of the heavens of the earth and the creatures therein)?" They will say: "Allah." Say: "Then Will you not fear Him?" (i.e. knowing that it is Allah alone that does all this, will you not worship alone and fear Him by obeying his commands and refrain from his prohibitions).

For that (the One who does all of that) is Allah, your Lord, the Truth (your true creator, and not those whom you have taken as gods besides Him who have no power over of anything), the One who disposes your affairs. And what is there after (knowing] the truth (and following it) except error (i.e. being distanced from it being lost in misguidance)? So how are you averted (from this clear Truth)?
