Habitat: Important nesting beaches include Ras Baridi (KSA) and Tiran Island, Zabargad Island, and Wadi Gemal (Egypt).
Diet: While young turtles eat invertebrates, adult green turtles are mostly herbivorous, grazing on seagrass.
Role: They are vital for keeping seagrass beds healthy.
Nesting: Females nest every few years, laying multiple nests per season, with warmer nests producing females and cooler ones males.
Population: Abu Dabbab Bay hosts significant numbers, with hundreds of turtles observed.
Threats & Conservation
Threats: Pollution (plastic bags mistaken for jellyfish), habitat degradation, climate change, and hunting (for eggs, shells, or flesh) endanger them.
Citizen Science: Projects like Turtlewatch Egypt involve divers and snorkelers to track turtles, identify feeding sites, and monitor impacts, using tech like AI for identification.
Research: Studies track migration routes, like between Zabargad Island and Abu Dabbab Bay.
