New trial questions for PTE Academic

If you are scheduled to take the PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI from 11 December 2023 to the end of January 2024, you may come across a couple of unfamiliar question types in the Speaking section. These new questions are being introduced as part of a trial by PTE to assess their effectiveness in a test setting.

The two new question types are similar in nature to existing questions on the test and assess the same English language skills. It's important to note that you won't be scored on these questions, but we recommend that you complete them to maintain the flow of your test. Your responses will contribute to our ongoing research.

New Zealand border fully reopening by July 2022
The Government has announced a new faster timeline for reopening the border and reconnecting New Zealand with the world. New Zealand’s border will now be fully reopened by the end of July – three months earlier than originally planned.
The Government has also announced changes designed to make it easier to attract and hire high-skilled migrants, while supporting some sectors to continue their shift away from relying on lower-skilled migrant workers.
This Immigration Rebalance plan seeks to lift working conditions for everyone, improve career pathways for New Zealanders and encourage businesses to focus on increasing productivity and resilience as part of our plans for economic recovery from COVID-19.
The changes include:
From 4 July
• The Accredited Employer Work Visa will include a median wage threshold.
• A green list will make it easier for employers to hire and attract migrants for high-skilled, hard-to-fill positions.
• New sector agreements to provide for short-term or ongoing need to access lower-paid migrants.
From September 2022
• Streamlined pathways to residence for migrants in green list occupations or paid twice the median wage.
From December 2022
• Most partners of temporary migrant workers will need to qualify for an Accredited Employer Work Visa in their own right, instead of automatically getting an open work visa.

Starting November 16, Pearson will launch a series of changes to ensure PTE Academic is the most convenient, stress-free English test available. The changes will be as follow:
- The test length will reduce from around 3 hours to around 2 hours.
- The number of questions will decrease.
- The speaking and writing section will reduce to 54-67 minutes.
- The reading section will reduce to 29-30 minutes.
- The optional break will be removed.
- The listening section will reduce to 30-43 minutes.
