Bridging the water gap ๐พ๐ง
The conversation continues.
In this third reel, Tena Alamirew Aguimassie explores the paradox of "economic water scarcity" in Ethiopia. While the country receives heavy rainfall during the summer months, much of it turns into destructive floods and runoff, leaving farmers productive for only three to four months out of twelve.
For WATDEV, effective water management is the ultimate key to transforming this challenge into a year-round opportunity. True to the project's spirit, the solutions are built by listening directly to the farmers - specifically selecting the best-performing irrigation scheme owners to gather insights that can be scaled up for entire communities.
Through this collaborative process, innovative practices and technologies are being adopted: from introducing shade-loving crops within agroforestry systems to the promotion of organic manure reutilization. Itโs about creating sustainable habits and watching the landscape change for the better.

The training brought together water managers, researchers, and technical experts from Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tunisia, the Netherlands, Finland and Italy who have been actively contributed to WATDEV activities throughout the past years. Moreover, a delegation of officials from relevant Egyptian ministries involved in the project, attended this training to foster collaboration, maximize and capitalise synergies among these two valuable projects supporting sustainable water management in Egypt
Professionals attending this training, gained hands-on experience using the WATDEV Modelling Toolbox to:
โ
Visualize model results for Best Management Practices (BMPs)
โ
Design new water and agricultural management scenarios
โ
Assess environmental, economic, and social impacts
โ
Conduct Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) to support evidence-based decisions
The training featured real-world case studies from Sharqia Governorate in Egypt and Gezira in Sudan, demonstrating how the toolbox can support data-driven decisions for sustainable water and agricultural management.
The training concluded with a memorable dinner cruise on the Nile River, offering participants a wonderful opportunity to connect, exchange experiences, and celebrate the success of the event while enjoying the unique atmosphere and vibrant spirit of Egypt. ๐ช๐ฌโจ

Water as a connector ๐ง
The conversation continues.
In this second reel, Prof. Abdin Salih explains why water cannot be treated as a single sector. Water connects communities, institutions, farmers, providers and decision-makers โ and this makes it everybodyโs business.
For WATDEV, improving water and soil management means building solutions through participation: not only informing communities, but involving them in the process, strengthening ownership and cooperation.
From farmersโ associations to public institutions, the point is clear: sustainable water management depends on balanced collaboration between those who use water and those who provide it.
As Prof. Salih reminds us, the future is not only about sharing water, but about sharing benefits.

How can grassroots knowledge and research work together to improve water and soil management in East Africa?
This is the conversation at the heart of WATDEVโs upcoming final conference โ and the starting point of this new reel series, leading us towards Kampala in June. More details below.
Across East Africa, communities, researchers, technical experts and public institutions are working together to identify solutions rooted in local experience and supported by scientific evidence.
In this first episode, Hon. Mwanajuma Mabuke Hiribae, from the County Government of Tana River, shares how WATDEV is supporting practical responses to climate-related challenges in the county.
Fro majuma Mabuke Hiribae, from the County Government of Tana River, shares how WATDEV is supporting practical responses to agroforestry and fruit trees to solar energy solutions, the project shows how participatory approaches can help turn knowledge into concrete action for farmers, communities and decision-makers.

Through hands-on demonstrations and peer-to-peer exchange, participants explored practical solutions like composting, efficient irrigation, and intercropping systems that improve soil health, optimize water use, and increase income.
The impact goes beyond the training itself, farmers left with stronger skills, practical tools, and a clear commitment to apply climate-smart practices in their own fields.
By engaging farmers beyond the initial project areas, WATDEV continues to scale impact, strengthen local knowledge, and support resilient farming systems.๐พ
