… Fireweed is the most sentimental flower in the world. It always blooms along the railways — in Russia, in Estonia, and in many other countries. You look out the window of a commuter train in August: it’s in bloom. Another summer is bound to come to an end. But “I need no other books but you” (Aqvarium’s song).

I love this world, and often my heart aches with a sweetness or a sorrow because of it.

I’m almost 34 and very sentimental at this point. Can’t wait to buy my little son a wooden horse, just like I had in my childhood. We moved a lot and I’m also an emigrant, so I don’t have many things from when I was little at home now. These pendants are the gift of my sentimentality to you.

…The smell of freshly baked bread, on the contrary, brings back an image in my memory: a slightly rusty, roundish GAZ truck bouncing along a rough little road with the word ‘Bread’ (ХЛЕБ) written on its side. It delivers gray loaves of black bread and white baguette-like loaves to kiosks and small grocery shops.

There was a literary genre in the 18th century called the sentimental journey.
In novels of this genre, the important things weren’t the landmarks or the circumstances of the trip, but the feelings and thoughts they stirred in the wandering protagonist. In a sense, the character travels not so much along a bumpy road or toward a destination, but inward—through the thread of their own memories, associations, and fantasies.
It occurred to me to create a small sentimental collection depicting the things that transport me to other places whenever I see them.
When I see a meat grinder, it brings back the smell of gorloder („throat burner”) — a sauce made from fresh tomatoes and garlic that we used to make at home in the autumn.

I love this world, and often my heart aches from it — sometimes sweetly, sometimes bitterly.

Был такой в 18 веке жанр — сентиментальное путешествие. Для романа в этом жанре важны были не достопримечательности, не обстоятельства пути, а чувства и мысли, которые они вызывают у странствующего героя. Получается, он путешествует не столько по тряской дороге или в пункт назначения, сколько внутрь себя и по нити своих воспоминаний, ассоциаций и фантазий.

Мне пришло в голову сделать маленькую сентиментальную коллекцию, изображающую вещи, которые отправляют меня в иные места, когда я их вижу.

Когда я вижу мясорубку, она вызывает в моей памяти запах горлодера — соуса из свежих помидоров и чеснока, который делали у нас дома осенью.

Я люблю этот мир, и часто у меня то сладко, то горько щемит от него сердце.
