Fortivus is in Cardiff today for ECSO Cyber Solution Days — our first time at this event, and we're attending as part of the British-Estonian Chamber of Commerce delegation.
The theme is AI and resilient digital futures, which sits squarely within what we do. At Fortivus, we work on human security and resilience — and one of the clearest lessons from this space is that you can't separate the human dimension from the digital one.
They're the same problem, and they need to be addressed together.
Wales has quietly built a strong cyber ecosystem, and we're looking forward to learning more about what's being developed here. There's real value in being in a room with people who are actually building things.
If you're attending today, come and find David, our CEO.

The world's longest subsea power cable just proved that energy security isn't about going it alone—it's about smart partnerships.
North Sea Link connects Norway and the UK with 720km of high-voltage cable lying on the seabed.
What it does:
Transfers up to 1,400 MW of electricity between the two countries. That's enough to power 1.4 million homes.
Why it works:
Norway has hydropower (clean, flexible, always available when needed).
The UK has wind (abundant but unpredictable).
When the wind blows in the UK, they export surplus power to Norway.
When it's calm, they import Norwegian hydro.
The results after one year (2021-2022):
4.6 TWh imported to the UK
£3.5 billion consumer benefit over 25 years
23 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided by 2030
Carbon cost repaid in 6 months
The bigger picture:
This is what resilience looks like. Not self-sufficiency, but strategic interdependence with countries you trust.
Two different energy systems—complementary, not competitive—creating stability for both.
One system's weakness becomes another's strength. That's infrastructure done right.

What happens when you remove 90% of cash from a cash-dependent economy?
Nigeria, 2023: The Central Bank redesigned banknotes with a 3-month deadline to swap old for new notes.
The numbers:
Only ₦300 billion in new notes printed vs ₦3.2 trillion withdrawn.
The result:
Currency circulation dropped 29.2% (lowest since 2008)
GDP contracted 3.11%
Riots, bank runs, businesses were paralysed
Digital payments initially DECLINED 7.5% in January—the opposite of what was intended
The context:
Nigeria's informal economy is 65% of GDP and 93% of employment. It runs almost entirely on cash. You can't force a digital transformation overnight when 90% of transactions depend on physical currency.
The lesson:
Infrastructure transitions require gradual adaptation, not shock therapy.
The same principle applies to any major system change—energy grids, healthcare systems, supply chains. You can't rip out the old system before the new one is ready to carry the load.
Resilience comes from meeting people where they are, not where policymakers want them to be.

How mobile money created economic resilience for millions
In 2007, Kenya's financial inclusion was 26%. Today: 84%.
M-Pesa didn't just provide convenience—it fundamentally changed how Kenyans withstand economic shocks.
Research shows households using M-Pesa maintained consumption during crises (illness, job loss, crop failure), whilst non-users saw 7% drops.
The 2007-08 test:
When post-election violence erupted, banks closed and roads became unsafe. But M-Pesa usage surged—people could still send money home via SMS from basic feature phones.
The results:
30.2 million active users (2024)
84% financial inclusion (vs 26% in 2006)
~194,000 households lifted out of poverty (2008-2014)
Zero consumption drop during shocks (vs 7% for non-users)
The lesson:
Leapfrog technology—bypassing traditional banking infrastructure entirely—created resilience where conventional systems failed.
Sometimes the most resilient solution isn't the most sophisticated. It's the one that works when everything else breaks.

🇪🇪🏴🇬🇧 Fortivus is joining the DBT and the British-Estonian Chamber of Commerce BECC Cyber Trade Mission to Wales next month.
We're on the hunt for the best cyber resilience partners out there — and Wales keeps coming up as a place where serious work is being done in this space.
For us, it's simple — to offer governments and businesses the most current cyber resilience solutions, we need to stay close to where innovation is actually happening. Wales feels like the right place to do that.
Looking forward to the conversations. If you're in the Welsh cyber space and want to connect, our CEO David Bailey will be there to talk 🤝

Happy Estonian Independence Day 🇪🇪
Today, Estonia celebrates 108 years of independence—a journey of resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief that freedom is worth defending.
From our team in Tallinn, this day holds deep meaning. Estonia's path to independence has never been straightforward. Declared on 24th February 1918, interrupted by occupation, restored in 1991—our independence has been fought for, lost, and reclaimed. It's a reminder that freedom isn't guaranteed—it must be protected.
Today also marks four years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 🇺🇦
The timing isn't lost on us. Estonia understands what it means to defend sovereignty against aggression. We understand the value of alliances, the importance of preparedness, and the courage required to stand firm when tested.
At Fortivus, our work is informed by this history.
Resilience isn't abstract—it's built through institutions, infrastructure, and the determination to protect what matters most. From civil defence to climate preparedness, we're committed to ensuring nations and communities can withstand whatever challenges they face.
Today, we're grateful for Estonia's independence, for the allies who stand with us, and for those in Ukraine who continue to defend their freedom with extraordinary courage.
Õnne Eesti Vabariigi aastapäevaks. 🇪🇪🇺🇦
